Steam remote storage
Steam allows us to view/download data saved in the clouds by the games in here
https://store.steampowered.com/account/remotestorage
but it also saves the multimedia data we share via chat as well, i could see the clips and pics i shared with my friend a month ago in there. so does it mean it counts towards our 20GB storage limit?
If im right that 20GB is supposed to be used only by the Steam cloud game saves and screenshots/artworks we upload to the Steam community. but this way if a user uses Steam chat a lot to share pics and videos with their friends then they will unknowingly fill up their space?

That one? That's the files you upload to chat.

yes that one, here is my screenshot.

now question is will they count towards our storage quota? i can easily reach 20gb in just a year, with Steam updating their android app maybe even faster, also there is no button to delete them.
When you open that link its written "
This game files are stored in your Steam Cloud : "

Hoo boy.

I've always used image hosting sites instead of uploading stuff directly to the chat.

I suppose that's why i never saw the tab.

I did however upload stuff in the past.

So, maybe those files are deleted from cloud.

That may mean that it doesn't save? :cwat:

They could've probably showed a total amount of usage in the page.

That would allow you to make calculations.

Yea sure but its faster to share via steam chat and if its true that it indeed takes up cloud permanently then its a bad feature.

I did upload images in the past - a few weeks ago.

They are not accessible.

That means that it's PROBABLY automatically deleted.

Yup it's easier, drag and drop everything in chat, the less 3rd party websites u use the safer.

another thing, for example i can give you the link to the video i shared privately with my friend 2 months ago, yes you can see it IF you have the link. think of it as unlisted videos in youtube, only those people with the link can see them, so practically it's Safe.

last thing, i think there is actually a way to find out if those files are taking up space in your 20GB storage or not. go to properties of one of your steam games that support cloud storage, in one of the tabs you can see how much storage is left of your account. write it down, upload some big videos to the chat like 100MB, then check the storage size again, it it doesn't change then we're fine.

It would honestly be a good question for support to answer.

I just went and calculated everything.

this is my storage details: 19.87 GB available. you can view it in the Updates tab of any steam cloud enabled game you own.
this is the sum of all the files in my cloud storage: 221.55 MB
this is the sum of all the files in my cloud storage (steam chat pic and video excluded): 108.3 Mb

so it doesn't take up any storage spaces. screenshots/artworks we upload to the steam community don't count towards our storage quota either.

It's most likely deleted after some time-period anyway.

I've got an image from August 13th, so I dunno what the time-frame is or if there are specific triggers.

I highly doubt they will automatically get deleted, that guy says that because he read somewhere the chat history gets deleted, while that might be true, it doesn't apply to the multimedia contents we share since they are not really the "chat history".

about the time frame, they started to save the stuff from the first day they enabled the Steam chat to be able to send and receive videos and pics, you don't see any files older than August simply because that feature didn't exist prior to that. so all of this suggest that those files aren't gonna get deleted any time soon.

nce feature, only missing to delte files now...
and i think steam is saving chat now like on discord. the chat client doesn't let you scroll to much upwards due memory limitations, but browser one does. it's true the old one was delted, or inacessable...

The chat has been saved for years and years. It used to be 3ish months but you could only ever see it on the mobile app.

Chat history in the client is deleted after 2 weeks.
