Think hard.
This is what I did specifically...

And the only things filtered are blacklisted links and hard coded filtered words like, free and skins. Put the 2 words together and they are filtered no matter what. And websites added to the filter.
I don't see any hearts in your profile.
Thank you! Now I can see people talking ♥♥♥♥.
I just don't like censorship. I'm not sensitive or triggered by nearly anything on the internet, especially text. If someone is using profanity in a trashy way, I don't want their trashiness censored.
Sure, YOU don't want that censorship, but it ain't your call. The simple fact here is that Valve have to provide a platform for ALL ages, regions, circumstances et al. What one person deems as no biggie, another might find really offputting. I know especially Americans get really up their own butt about perceived censorship, thnking there's malice under every decision, but it simply isn't the case.
It's just empathy. Well, that and liability too.
I'm quite sure, just like any company, Valve would always err on the side of caution when it comes to anything that might even remotely sniff of being held liable for.
Apologies, when I meant removing the profanity filter I just want it removed for myself. I don't mind content coming censored initially, but it was kind of annoying that I couldn't easily disable it in Steam despite seemingly turning off all the options. If people want their content censored it's fine with me, but forcing my content to be censored annoys me.
Your profile belongs to Steam. Your comments and chat belong to steam. Your group activity belongs to steam. If you're using the Steam client *you are in their house* and you must behave by their rules. If those rules include "well you can see a few swears over here and over there" that's what you get. You don't get any additional rights or privileges from having a list of 'okay' words that YOU are okay with. their system is not okay with some, or not okay with them used in certain portions of their house.
Personally, I wouldn't bother about it. People - especially certain chunks of the American market - get WAY too hung up on perceived censorship and "mah freedoms". Not saying this is the case with you, just pointing it out.
The reality is this - just because something is censored or removed it does not mean anything draconian or even malicious is going on.
The fact remains that Valve, like so many other companies have to deal with the WHOLE world. Myriad situations, ages, markets and so on. So they MUST create a platform as welcoming as possible to EVERYONE.
And that's why. So I wouldn't worry about it, simply because there's nothing to worry about.

Yup.
Many people seem to think they can use the swear filter to hide behind, especially those edgy types that like to think they can run hard against the rules all the time.
You can't. Because simply put, if you swear like I do, and it's filtered, then all's well.
But if you swear and there's malice or threat behind it, then removing the word does NOT remove the intent.
For example "I'm going to beat your ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ arse" WILL be worthy of action.
Yes, pretty much. It's always been a mystery for me, because the rules are clearly and simply worded, where it says do not post abusive language, including swearing.
It does NOT say "do not post abusive language, including swearing, unless it will be filtered out with hearts".
Never can understand why people just don't follow the rules. Some have to learn the hard way, I guess.
I quite agree, and it's not just that either.
Being an old git myself, when I first joined Steam and got involved on the forums, I read the rules. Made a couple of small trip ups (posting a question about something which could be viewed as piracy) but the most important thing was to sit back and read how OTHERS used it.
Even if you can't grasp the rules, it's really not difficult to watch for a couple of weeks or days to see what gets actioned and how.
also, those that truly break the rules innocently tend to man up and take it on the chin. The ones who are disingenious are usually the ones that moan loudest. They tend to be the edgy ones continually pushing.
Add \pl+ to "never filter these words."
