Guest pass?

My friend gave me a key/product code for the game Killing Floor, but when I looked in my steam inventory, it says that it is a guest pass? What does it mean? Is this a glitch?

Your friend didn't give you a full product, just a demo.

or you added the game key/gift to your library and THAT gave you a guestpass to share with some other people.
