Recieved a message on Discord saying someone was impersonating me and scamming people
I received some messages on Discord alleging that someone was impersonating me and scamming people, and that my account was accidentally reported instead of his. The message is as follows:

"and i accidentally reported your account for doing illegal purchase instead of someone else and the steam support said that your account will be suspended I am really sorry and I tried to tell him that it was just a mistake profile ID but the admin need to prove that you are innocent can you add him and explain that it was a mistake?

this is the email i receive for the report i did and i'm trying to unreport it but they need to verify you"

Screenshots were included.

This was quite a shock to me; I hadn't heard anything about something like this until now. I don't know why someone would impersonate me, a little-known account with few friends, to scam people.

In all honestly I'm quite unsure if this actually occurred, this seems like a potential scam targeting me in and of itself. Does anyone here have any idea of what's happening?

It's a scam

Well known scam method. Steam will NEVER contact you via Discord, also wrong "reports" do nothing, Steam Support has all the logs and if someone reported you for something you did not do , absolutely nothing will happen.
The scammers just want you to panic and contact that supposed " Steam admin" via Discord who will tell you something like he needs to "check" your account and demands your login details to "verify" it .

Block everyone involved and in turn report their Steam accounts for trying to scam you.
Then move on with your life, nothing will happen to you.

Why would someone be impersonating you? Are you secretly a celebrity or something?

Yes, someone is trying to scam you with some pretty absurd lies. Report their account by following the instructions here, block them, and move on with your life: https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/360000291932-How-to-Properly-Report-Issues-to-Trust-Safety

If you're still unsure, read the profile of this Valve employee: https://steamcommunity.com/id/afarnsworth/

Valve has no need to speak with you over Discord. And Valve doesn't need to speak with you to "verify" anything because they have far better access to their own database than you do. No false report will trick Valve into banning your account. Think about that. If anyone could get anyone banned by just making a bogus report, don't you think it would be a bigger problem? It's nonsense. A bogus report when you've done nothing wrong will be discarded.

Valve will only contact you on steam.

1. Scan for malware using anti-virus
2. Deauthorize all other devices https://store.steampowered.com/twofactor/manage
3. Change passwords from a clean computer
4. Generate new backup codes for your Mobile App https://store.steampowered.com/twofactor/manage
5. Revoke the API key https://steamcommunity.com/dev/apikey (there should be nothing in the APIKEY)

To stop getting these type of messages on discord, go to your settings and make your messages friends only and only add people you know/played with. If a friend you know on discord sends this type of message then their account is compromised.

If you notice messages you didn't send on discord. Immediately do full virsus scan for pc and phone.

Change your email and password for discord and everything that uses that same information even if virsus protection says your fine. Since if you see a message you didn't send then your account is compromised.

Pattern of scam:

Bait, story, steps

If you logged in using the link given do the steps in post #6 and DO NOT TRADE until you have done them. If they are in your account they can manipulate your trades. Immediately cancelling a trade then creating a new on to an impersonators account the looks the same.

Even if someone really did report you by mistake what do you expect to happen? Reports get investigated and if no evidence to match the report nothing would happen. It's a typical scare tactic to make users panic into not thinking clearly so you follow their BS which results in you getting screwed over.

Way to necro a 2 year old thread. Not only that you do so with incorrect information. They don't hack your account, they hijack your account and only if you give them your login credentials.
