They want your items. If you trade with a friend like they want, they will redirect the trade to a different account with the same name and avatar, and your items will be gone.

The whole point of the API key scam is not to steal the account but to encourage you to trade your items in which they can steal them because they have rigged your API key. Scammers like this aren't after your account or to play games - they want your inventory and they need you to do the work to give it away without being noticed.

overtaking your account and locking you out of it only makes you possibly lock the account and try to get it back via Steam support.

there are several market and trade restrictions applied when you change credentials and Steam guard. those delays make it less possible to get items out of an account.
so they turn this into a bait, story, steps scenario instead to target the victims gullibility, which has more success.

what do you mean "Fix up"? if you dd all the steps to secure the account, then your account is secured. if your profile name/avatar/description or other parts of the profile got changed, you need to hit the EDIT PROFILE button and start changing it back to what you wanted it to look like
