Quake 3 arena asking for CD key

My Steam purchased Q3 Arena is asking for a CD key. Why? I have 91 hours of play and this just occurred.

Right click game in your library list and hover over manage. Click CD keys.

Now it will not even boot up. All other games boot up except this one, I tries to reinstall it...same problem..Sigh!

right click game, view CD key, and put CD key in.

Why? because it is disgustingly old that game. the key check is IN the game files, so ancient it is.

backup your save data and temporarily remove it from the folder, see if it loads without any save data attached to it?

They are adequate, I have 91 hours of successful play with this particular game until now.

it'd help to know your specs to further diagnose any kind of issue... posting your specs poses no security threat whatsoever.
