Launch a game on Steam remotely? - Stream play
Hi Folks,

Over the past few days I've been using Steam remote play to play games on my home PC, whilst I'm elsewhere on a laptop.

When I view my library, every game had a green 'Stream' button in-place of 'Play/Install'.

This was great as I was able to run my entire library remotely, whilst in quarantine.

However yesterday I only had one game open and it crashed, meaning that I was no longer in game. Because no games are open, I'm now unable to stream play. The option is no longer there, and a little pop up said 'PC Is no longer available for streaming'. Is there a way of remotely launching a game through Steam?

I know that it seems that the host machine just died or similar, but my status is still active on Discord and other apps, so I know the machine is up and running, with web access.

I have no other remote access set up and I don't have physical access, so Steam is my only option here. Any knowledge on this appreciated.

Cheers!

steam has to be restarted on the host machine
can do so thru a vpn or remote desktop connection in windows but someone would have to be at the host to initiate it
Ah, thanks for clarifying. I was hoping this wasn't the case!

What's the best bet to avoid this in the future then, have a few games open at all times so I can always connect?

prob but having games open shouldnt make steam disconnect, its a known bug that valve is aware of just have to wait for them to fix it

also u can add a non steam app like wordpad or something lightweight so that u always have something running to make a connection
teamviewer/vnc for the future
as there will be always stuff that you can not influence.

If I have a VPN to the same network as that PC is on, but no way to remote in directly, is it possible to start steam? I do have console access to the linux box that is hosting my VPN, but its not the same PC.
