How to deal with invalid cd keys?

How many times did you try?
Did you try the usual tricks like changing an 8 to a B and 0 for O, etc?

We need to know more than that.

not every cd key is for steam. where did you get the key (if the site gets blocked by the forum filter, DO NOT BYPASS IT)
what is the format of the key (do not post the actual key) XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX or XXXXX-XXXXXXXX?
what game is the key for?

they are legit sites, not grey market sites. legit sites get their keys from the game developer, grey market gets them from anywhere and everywhere (fake keys, used keys, wrong region, free keys they are selling, demo keys, listing base game keys as bundles, etc)

People are helping you. But we can't do things for you. You do have to answer the questions asked when people are trying to identify your problem.

If you don't know what message you got, enter the key again and copy it down.

Then the key might be for GOG, not Steam. Either that, or whoever gave you the key is a scammer and gave you a fake one.

If you bought it on Steam, this wouldn't happen. If you bought it on GOG you have to play it through there.

Anywhere else? Not likely valid, and if you purchased it from a site that that shows up as removed or censored here on the forum, you got ripped off.

I don't think you've been able to buy Steam keys for any Witcher game for years. All authorized key resellers only sell GOG keys these days for obvious reasons.
