will my external hard disk be ok
my external hard disk is a transcend StoreJet 25H3 4tb

does leaving an external hard disk running for long hours have negative effect on the external hard disk? i wanted to test doing backup from external hard disk to an online service. yesterday i ran it from 11pm to 3am and today i ran it from 11am to 5pm. it got a bit warm. i never used my external hard disk for that long before. is what i did ok and it wont damage the external hard disk?

Wil be fine.
No wont hurt it if any its better to leave on than shut off turn on shut off etc
Usualy have a life span 6 to 7 years when you should consider moving all files to a new one.
Buy really good reliable brands.
WD and or Seagate expansion.
I have my Seagate Expansion drive 5TB for over 4 years performs perfect. It has to with 4 TB of games on.
transcend is also a reliable brand

i bought it in june. i only use it once a month to backup my data to the external hard disk so it is not off on off on

as long as it has a stable horizontal or vertical position while they are running, the lifetime is like any other mechanical hdd.
of course they have failure points because they are mechanical but for me it was very rare that a drive died before 4 years of constantly running 24/7.
as with any mechanical hdd, be more careful with it than a baby.

in general: 3-2-1 rule
3 copies of your data.
2 on different devices
1 off-site

common convenient solution for this
your devices -> NAS -> cloud
which can also be automated at every part.

just checked out of curiosity:
the longest drive in use i have is a Seagate Barracuda ES, it has an uptime for 6 years and 22 days and installed it was in dec 2007
while this drive is for enterprise use, the warranty on it is/was 5 years.
