[FIXED] My Xbox controller suddenly acts all weird when Steam is open.
So basically i tried to play Nioh and my cam was just spinning and William had his bow equipped all the time. So i thought hmm maybe the controller is broken cause i dropped it last week. And i went out and bought a new Xbox one controller.

I connect it with the wireless adapter opened nioh, still samed problem. I open RE4 same problem. I uninstall all drivers, delete the adapter and controller numerous times from my device manager still not working. I install the driver manually and its not working. I try a diffrent usb port. Not working. I try that method where i install a driver from my harddrive and i select like "Xinput device" not working.

Then i go ino steam big picture mode, delete all layouts, for desktop etc. I disable Xbox support etc close steam restart steam still not working. I enable everything close steam then enable everything again still not working. I go to the config files delete everything with the controller. And it doesnt work.

i go to windows settings game mode and nothing was enabled there.

The only clue i found out is: if i close steam and press RB nothing happens but when i open steam and holf RB suddenly my mouse comes up and i can move the mouse with my right stick but only diagonal. And if i hold RB and use my left stick up and down i can turn up my volume.

yo what the ♥♥♥♥?

steam settings -> controller -> general

when the game themselves support a controller then Steams stuff is mostly more annoying then helpful.
I just recorded this video for you guys to understand my problem

I did this and now my game works but if I’m in game and press RB the left stick still changes my volume
Similar problem. Played Monster Hunter World for a couple of weeks with my x360 controller and yesterday it started acting all messed up when Steam is running. Looks like they broke something in their x360 controller support. This is so annoying...
Similar issue, I've done this already but pressing RB moves my mouse around and clicks
I have the same problem. I open up big picture, settings, controller settings, and define layout. I remap all the buttons and it works again. Sometimes it's wonky and I have to reconnect the controller before the inputs are successfully remapped.

My problem now is that the layout does not save. After I restart my computer I have to remap all over again. Been looking and can't find a solution to that.
I had this issue, use the beta client.
Yep had the exact same problem. Fixed it by changing to the beta client.
I cannot believe this worked, thank you
Thank you so much!
For anyone whose controller is weird when playing a Xbox game pass on pc the problem is steam. In steam you go to settings and go to controller. In controller look toward what says “enable steam input for xbox controller” and switch it off. Put it back on if your playing a game on steam though. The problem isn’t that the steam is open on the background but that you have steam.
(2024) Unfortunately this no longer works, and the useless ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ at $team dont care / arent interested (based on their response to my support ticket). The ONLY way to stop steam from screwing up EVERY OTHER DAMN NON STEAM GAME YOU PLAY is to shut down steam.
Ive even been trying to play some Epic games, and GOG, and if $team is running, the sensitivity is completely messed up
9way too sensitive), even if every controller setting is disabled in steam.

TLDR: Just close $team whenever you play any other game

This works for me. I had the same wonky controller inputs occur the moment I activated Steam. A = B = Y and the right control stick controlled the mouse cursor on my second (non-game application) monitor.

It's annoying to remember to change the Xbox controller setting back on every time I switch to Steam instead of the Microsoft Store, but it's the best I have right now.

*Seriously, PC gamers wonder why console gamers prefer consoles to PCs. I've never had a controller input issue on a game console. Like ever.

Sounds like you want to disable the Desktop Layout. It translates the controller to certain keyboard/mouse inputs when outside of applications launched (and known as running) by Steam.

Steam > Settings > Controller > Desktop Layout [Edit] > Disable Steam Input

THIS! You saved me man. Been having these issues for years and always closed steam when i was playing something on Epic Games for example. Now it seems to work properly again. <3
