VoiceMeeter and Steam
Hello, I made a post about this few months ago but I gave up since I had no concluding answers... Now I have still the problem but it's quite different :

I'm using expsoundboard and voicemeeter to display sounds on TS servers and so on.

To do this, in voicemeeter settings my inputs are my microphone and expsoundboard (its output is VB-Audio VoiceMeeter VAIO which is my input in voicemeeter). Then I set voicemeeter output as default communication device so if any sound is played by my microphone or my soundboard, it's redirected to voicemeeter which redirect it again into voicemeeter's output (my virtual microphone I'm using).

Result: it works fine with everything such as teamspeak discord and so on BUT not with steam !
Steam is displaying my voice correctly but any other sound isn't displayed though I clearly see they are played on the output.

edit: voice works only with my headset, I have also one microphone on my webcam but it doesnt work (while I clearly see it detects sound from it in voicemeeter) and swapping inputs doesn't work either. Indeed, even when I remove all inputs from voicemeeter, Steam still display my voice ... It's like the communication device was still set on my headset by default (while I changed it)

Thank you

steam uses the default recording device as microphone. is that voice thing set as default?

As I said yeah but somehow steam still display microphone output... (I mean VoiceMeeter's output is shown as default device on Steam but this is my microphone which is directly used)

I found the problem. It was kinda strange but here it is : I understand it like the default communication device (device on which you HEAR communications) must be reachable by steam. After Voicemeeter and VB cable install, your audio settings are reset. So you must define a new default audio device, a new default microphone and a new default communication device (I don't think I'm clear here).

So, in my case, voicemeeter output must be set as default device AND default communication device in windows sound options which was the case already. But my headset must be set as default device (so for any audio output) BUT ALSO as default communication device which solved the problem. By default, I think your headset/speaker has both parameters activated. After installation of voicemeeter/VB cable, it resets everything. In my case, I just activated "default device" for my headset. It sounds like steam also needed the default communication device on it, which was desactivated.

I know this is an old thread but I know the easy way to fix it. On hardware imput 1, click the a2 button and make sure its on. Then go to the A2 portion of "hardware output" on the right and match it with the default driver which SHOULD be "voice meter input" and your mic should be able to be picked up in any steam game. If that doesnt work just keep changing the output driver until it picks up your mic. You're welcome.

Thanks for helping people haha, I'm not using it anymore myself. If I remember, my problem was really related to a windows default option, not to the software itself. But maybe your solution solve the same problem in a different way.

This solved a problem that bothers me for a long time, several STEAM games did not accept directing to the virtual channel, now putting this virtual channel as a standard on the audio control panel everything works again! THANKS :cozyspaceengineersc:

sorry for my bad English but:
Your voice doesnt go to ALL SOUNDS, only for Discord or etc. For example I have 5 routes:
- A1 - My microphone
- A2 - Discord to MY HEADPHONES
- A3 - Discord to OBS
- B1 - ALL SOUNDS
- B2 - Sounds to OBS
You need to add route from A1(my microphone) to B1(All sounds). Go to your voicemeeter and set on your microphone route (my A1) button B1(All sounds).

And dont forget to change you input and output device at steam settings

Idk your sets in voicemeeter but I hope that awful answer will help... :)
