Annoying Cursor Jumping Problem
So before I start this post, I'd like to mention that I've seen many different variations of this problem on the web, all with solutions that don't work for me.

My mouse cursor occasionally jumps around the screen, like to an edge or a corner. It's really annoying and makes it much harder to play Steam games. The twist is the it only occurs when the Steam CLIENT in running on my machine. When Steam isn't running, the mouse works perfectly fine. This means that the problem is likely not with my mouse pad or track pad.

When playing games, my camera will randomly spin around very quickly and do 3-4 full rotations in the matter of half a second. This has lead to be being reported in other games for "spin botting".

My mouse (which is wireless) has the latest drivers and I am running a 64-Bit Windows 10 gaming laptop. I can provide DxDiag information if necessary.

The only thing that I found to have worked at all was disabling pointer precision in the Windows mouse settings, but that makes it hard for me to use the mouse normally and doesn't answer the question of why this only happens with steam open.

If anyone can provide information as to why having the Steam client open may be affecting my mouse, and maybe a potential fix, I would greatly appreciate it.

For me it's usually that the mouse was broken and the odd time it's from crud on the surface.

Try a different mouse.

Why would it be that it only happens when steam is open, though?

Its the game you're playing; put it on Windowed Borderless Mode.

Laptop = Make sure the TouchPad settings are configured to where this gets auto-disabled anytime a Mouse is plugged in.

It's not the game I'm playing; it happens on literally any game when the Steam client is open. Even google chrome, the mouse sometimes quickly moves to the "x" button (also very annoying). Even on the desktop the mouse jumps! Closing the steam client resolves this issue for some reason.

Check the Windows Settings that none of this is enabled:

> Sticky Keys
> Mouse Keys
> Mouse Snap-To or Visibility

If you have any Controller actively connected, always disconnect this when not using. Or ensure it is not setup to act as a point device for Desktop Mode; which can make a game controller work like a Mouse.

The latest beta might fix this: https://steamcommunity.com/groups/SteamClientBeta#announcements/detail/1706188320735255372

Fixed a bug with controller support causing too much USB hid device traffic and causing performance issues with USB keyboards, mice, and other devices on the users system

Can I just add that I have a similar problem
where my Logitech G502 was all erratic and jumpy only in older games.
And furthermore that it wasn't always like that.
I'm not sure what I did or what happened to cause the change but suddenly one day the entire Penumbra series had the problem, and Serious Sam HD, and several others.
Tried everything I could think of, but those games remain unplayable for me.
Newer games are all fine.

I had the same problem a couple of years ago when I used to play CS GO, but then it disappeared. Couple of month ago this problem came back when I started Playing Dead by Daylight and even when Wallpaper Engine starts to run, which is really annoying. I really hope someone will find a solution. I'm currently thinking aboout reinstalling steam and all the games. Hopefully will help

Stilll most likely hardware related.

The thing is when those games (and/or Steam) are loaded, they will load certain drivers and/or settings for peripherals like your mouse.

I have a couple of games where as standard the mouse does this. I simply adjust the sensitivity and it stops.

It can also commonly happen if you have a controller connected at the same time, or if you've previously had one connected and something still thinks it's there as well.

So, although I don't have any defeinitive solution, don't assume it's just something within Steam that needs fixing. It might in some cases, it might not at all.
Seems to be a lot of people having this issue, including me as of last night.

My problem disappeared with a new mouse and mousepad. I'll let you know if it flares up again... though I have a new PC now (this post turns 5 years old tomorrow)

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
