Do I choose PS4 button prompts or loss of major controller features
Steam doesn't let games that natively support and DETECT PS4 controller to show PS4 button prompts while a controller is configured. Everything works just fine if the developer just has an option to switch button prompts. I am not sure whether it only happens with non-steam games but the game I am playing currently is non-steam. I have also had the problem in the past with other games but I can't recall whether they were steam or not.

I am playing a game and using a PS4 controller (I also own a SC but I can't play FPS without a right stick). I have configured my PS4 controller to send a keyboard M on a hold and the gyro to operate as a mouse (I have tried disabling all other Xbox buttons and vice versa). If I play the game without Steam, or I force off PS4 support in Steam, the game will display PS4 buttons. If I play the game through steam in order to use the gyro, it will show Xbox prompts. If I try to force off configuration support in the Steam UI, I can't configure ANYTHING on the PS4 controller, even if I'm not sending any controller commands.

So, TL;dr, the way the steam UI works won't let you configure a PS4 controller AND use the Gyroscope or configure additional buttons with holds, touch menus, etc. at the same time.

The only work around I can think of is too set a global config but that is a huge pain.

There's a few solutions I can think of.

1. Let me configure what kind of controller I want Steam to expose to the game.

2. Let my native PS4 controller output pass through the Steam UI, instead of interrupting it and emulating Xbox output.

3. Let me disable controller output altogether by Steam, and just let me configure the PS4 controller with any keyboard or mouse input I want, sort of like just using a global config.

I know some people will want to say "Just learn the xbox controller" or "you'll get used to it" or whatever. If you search, many people would prefer button prompts according to their controller. It is also obvious. So if I happen to be here posting on a day with a bunch of nay-sayers (as I've been before when trying to solve similar issues), I'll state preemptively that many people find matching button prompts to be important.

how about... just memorize abxy? I'm a playstation player, and it only took about 3 hours to get used to the switch. I have no issue with any button prompt on any game using ds4. Or maybe use a logitech f510 for a minute?

And in those three hours I have already stopped playing due to frustation, deinstalled the game and gone back to my PS where X is on the bottom and green on the top like it should be.

Try reading the post completely.

like I said, buy a logitech f310/f510/f710, same feel as ps controller, but with xbox buttons. you'll get used to it quicker, I guess. honestly, there's no problem once you get used to it.

Steam makes it so you can use ds4 on EVERY GAME, Even unsupported by controller, That's worth learning new buttons for

Please stop posting. Here's why. I don't own a logitech f710. I'm not going to buy a new one. Second, that controller looks stupid, uncomfortable, and nothing like a PS4 controller. Third, it doesn't seem to have a gyroscope, which is almost the main point of this post. So you are just running off your mouth and derailing my thread.

Disable steam overlay if the game natively allows you to use ds4 then, that's your solution. Steam controllers can only work if steam overlay is on.

Thank you for attempting to be helpful, but that solution is clearly not applicable in this situation. I've already provided three better solutions, as well as a workaround. Again, you have not read my post and are perhaps basing your comments on the title or some brief glance at the content. That is not a good way to be helpful and you should exercise some restraint in commenting on things if you do not have the discipline or focus to be able to read a few paragraphs.

So if I get the main issue right is that "Steam Controller" (as in the steam settings for any controller) is IDing itself as an Xbox controller and there for confusing the game to think its an Xbox and not a PS4 controller? and therefore shows the wrong buttons?

Yes exactly right.

To be more precise, the Steam overlay is taking your controller input, running it through the mapping you set up in the controller configuration, and then sending an "emulated" Xbox controller command to the game. Since the game sees an Xbox controller, it shows Xbox button prompts instead of PS4 prompts.

Now PS4 is fully supported by Steam and many games are now providing PS4 prompts but Steam still will only send Xbox commands if you want to do ANY configuration of the controller.

Well I do agree then, not sure its a high priority for Valve at this time as in the end it does work, but I think it is neat if they indeed add that option to tell the game what controller is really used even if its emulated
