Steam Publishing Question
I was wondering if anyone here has ever published a game to Steam? We've been trying to get a game from 1996 (Meridian 59) visible to the public to regrow the player-base... It's one of the first Multi-player online games (before Ultima Online came out).

Back in 2012 the original creators applied to have it listed on Steam, but they denied it without any reason at all.

Since that time, we've updated the game to use DirectX (Ogre3D) and have made vast improvements. I know it's an old game, but this was most of my teenage years and right now we're sitting around 40 people who still hang around the Discord channel for the game.

If anyone knows what we can do to ensure that the game gets listed (Free to Play), that would be helpful. We just don't want to put in 100 hours of work to make it compatible with Steam for them to shoot it down without a reason.

Thanks so much!! :)

Also I am asking here because I couldn't get an answer through the Steam Ticket system. They just forwarded me to the documentation for publishing.

It would be nice if I had some guidelines that guarantee the game gets listed - Perhaps a silver lining (if that's the right term).

The first thing would be to make sure you own the rights to this game.
Then you should read the information they give about Steam Direct.
You should have a pretty good idea, how to continue after that.

Thanks for your replies!

The copyright holders were rejected even after following the steamdirect partnership guidelines. They weren't given a reason for the rejection either.

I went to the creators and they told me that. I was wanting to do all of the Steam wrapper updates for the game to make it compatible with steam as long as I have permission from them.

I just don't want to end up like they did with an unknown rejection, even with all of the guidelines followed. That's mainly what I was hoping to figure out by posting here.

You probably need to make a legal contract with the original creators / publishers of the game for Steam to consider this. After that Steamdirect is what you are looking for. This is something that hasn't been there in 2012 - apart from the fee it was harder to get a game on Steam back then.

Don't worry about that, Steam lets basically everyone in now if you pay the fee.

in 2012 greenlight was started and shortly before that everyone was rejected because greenlight was coming. i dont find any greenlight page of that game, so it seems like there was no interest afterwards by them.

and yes, now it is basicly pay the fee and you are in and it would be the best if they do that, it seems at least that they are not completely dead.

You guys are the best thank you so much!

Yeh and no worries on getting back to the original creators. They might be able to re-submit their application knowing what everyone here said - BUT if they decide not to take the risk or they're too busy, I will try to get permission from them to move forward.

Thank you guys (and girls if any) - Much love <3
