Steam connection error with slow internet via satellite connection
So, I am onboard a seagoing vessel which has internet via a satellite (VSAT). This obviously means low bandwidth and very high latency.

The problem is logging into Steam, it can take several hours before I manage to login constantly getting “connection error”.

Once I manage to login it usually is ok, I only need to be logged in to be able to play “Cities Skyline” as playing it off-line is not an acceptable option for me.
My question is if there are any tweaks to be made that will make the steam program more fault tolerant to very slow internet connections, like timeout settings or such?

Thanks

ahoy.

i would try to run Steam with -tcp parameter. tcp has more error resolving then udp.

other parameters that might help:
-no-browser (if you use offline mode anyway, why even load the thing, can cause issues with a handful of games though)
-noverifyfiles (skips the filecheck of Steam client at startup, speeds up thinks and i believe it does download some hashes)

Ahoy wuddih

Thanks for the suggestions, unfortunately none of them worked and I tried all possible combinations.

its entirely possible steam is blocked on the connection via a firewall rule. I woudlnt rely on that working

Hi Satoru

The thing is that I do get connected in the end only it takes a lot of patience. So that rules out a firewall blockage in my opinion. I also tried connecting through VPN (NordVPN and indentity cloaker) with the same result.
