USB disconnect/reconnect issue when Steam's running
Started having this problem this morning. Getting USB disconnect/reconnect sounds every few seconds. Mouse (G602) and keyboard (K65 LUX) - both hooked up to a USB hub (D-Link DUB-H7) - are unaffected. Don't have any other USB devices connected at the moment.

Did a Windows update and restart, still had the problem. But shutting down Steam made it stop. And trying it again - mouse and keyboard stop working breifly *in* Steam when this happens, but they work everywhere else.

Looking in Device Manager, when it disconnects, one of each of the following devices disappear from the Human Interface Devices list: "HID-compliant vendor-defined device" and "USB Input Device." Running normally, with Steam shut down, there are 8 for the former, 7 of the latter listed.

About Steam: Steam client application, built: Oct 11 2017, at 11:00:59, Steam API: v017, Steam package versions: 1507769972.

Windows 8.1 64-bit, i5-4690k, Gigabyte GA-Z97X-SLI, 8GB DDR3 2133, ASUS STRIX GTX 970, Asus VG248QE over DisplayPort.

After a bit more testing - Steam has decided it doesn't like my USB hub (or the cable connecting the hub?). I can move mouse and keyboard over to direct connection with PC, no devices plugged into the USB hub, and still have the issue. Disconnect the hub, no issue. Or connect mouse/keyboard to hub and shut down Steam, no issue. Windows/other apps don't seem to have an issue with the hub.

I've been running this setup for quite a while, so I don't know what's changed...

if you run on stable Steam version then this was updated last night this changed some controller stuff and your hub or whatever you have might be recognized and intercepted as one.

check steam settings -> controller -> configuration if that is the case and disable it

General Controller Settings: The only thing checked is "Guide Button Focuses Steam." Unchecking it doesn't change anything. Tried checking all the other boxes, no change.

Big Picture Configuration: Just looks like the layouts for the Steam Controller (which I don't have).

Desktop Configuration: "Configuration Support Disabled

Configuration support for the Unknown Controller is disabled. Unknown Controller Configuration support must be enabled in Steam's main Controller Settings and Support for this Game must be enabled under this game's Controller Options."

Guide Button Chord Configuration: Sits at a big picture mode load screen indefinitely? Doesn't seem to do anything.

EDIT - I have used the official Xbox 360 and Xbox One adapters, but not recently. Neither adapter is connected currently. Neither controller connected directly by USB, either.

After the most recent update, this seems to be fixed?

Problem is back, except now it seems to be doing 2x disconnect notification each time, instead of disconnect then reconnect.

Same issue here. What did Steam do?

I have been having this issue myself more often now. Keyboard, Trackball Mouse, USB BT with Scarlet.Crush for PS3 Controller, Webcam, and also Logitech G633 Headphones. The strange thing is that everything disconnects except for the Headphones and the system does not freeze/hang it just disables the USBs. The only thing different I recently did was add an old 2.1 HUB for printers... I will remove the HUB today and see what happens.

Most recent change was I put all games in /borderless /windowed mode and turned off Steam Overlay - still get issue.

i disconnected the old USB HUB i added and so far i have not had this issue. there could be some compatibility issue there with old items.

i have now turned back on the Steam Overlay and it is not causing any issues. as i mentioned i recently started using an old USB HUB once i removed that i no longer am getting the disconnect. i still am keeping the games in /borderless /windowed though since i actually like it more now - i can access other apps and even use skype.

Yes, several months later, my experience is the same. Will often get USB disconnect/reconnect every few seconds, which is fixed by either shutting down steam OR disconnecting my USB hub (and leaving it disconnected).

It happens often enough that I'm simply running Steam less often than normal to avoid this issue. My other option is to relocate my PC so that I don't need to use the hub.

I dissconnected the old USB Hub and still keep getting the USB Disconnect/Reconnect now when i start games. this is happening for Dark Souls 3 and Just Cause 3 mainly.

I am not sure now if the internal USB Hubs are an issue; that being the ones that are connected to the Motherboard through factory supplied cables. This is really irritating since it if it doesnt not reconnect there is nothing you can do to fix it.

I've had this problem for a long time with a simple foot pedal that i use for games. I have found a solution for me though! Don't know if this applies to everyone who has the problem, but hopefully i can be of some help.

What i eventually realized was that steam recognized the pedal as a game controller, but i guess didn't know what to do with it (?). So i look at the pedal drivers and find that it has drivers for being both a game controller and a mouse. That's not necessary since it only acts as a keyboard, so i disabled all the HID-drivers that are siblings to the keyboard drivers. I haven't had the problem since.
