Are Gigabyte speed downloads possible?
Hi. Would it be possible to download a game like GTA 5 which is like 69-72GB (don't know how big it is at the top of my head) could download in less than 90 minutes if a consistent speed of 1GB/s is used either over WiFi or Ethernet. Is it possible? It takes me around 6 hours to download at around 15Mb/S right now. I hope this could one day be reality. The technology is there. Is it just the steam servers? Could they handle that kind of traffic? They download Gigabytes daily. What difference would this have?

Yes you can. I had Verizon Instant and it averaged 924Mb/s on Steam. Steam can saturate your connection easily. If you are not getting reliable speeds, check for anything that might be hindering Steam and its processes.

What could I check for?

EDIT
I have a wifi speed of 13.0MB/S.
I have an ethernet speed of 1.0GB/s
All this was through the built in windows information in the network settings menu in the control panel.

I have NEVER gotten speeds faster than around 15-23 MB/S when downloading on Steam.

I don't wanna do a test through on Steam. I don't wanna reinstall GTA 5 again. That can be hell because of my mods and stuff.

The speed your (parents) are paying for to the ISP.
Steam>Settings>Downloads>Downlaod Region.
There you select the closest or the region ure in. Im from Bosnia and Italy works the best for me.
Play with it till you find whats the best 4 you
And you probably wanna use an ethernet cable. It helps

That just shows what the hardware can do.
For the real speed you have to pay, and you would know.
WiFi is your bottleneck.
If your Router-WiFi or USB-/PC-WiFi use 802.11g or older you will never get more than 54 M bit/s gross (~22 M bit/s net). And if you have many interfering because many of neighbors with WiFi too or bad walls or to many thing between your both WiFi ‎devices you will still low rates with newer protocols like 802.11n.
Remember that your cable network card with 1 GB, means you get max. 125 M bit/s gross.
If you have a slow WiFi (and your windows mean 13 M bit/s, that is slow), make your internet connection without WiFi and only about Ethernet-cable from your computer to your router or modem. And if your router is cheap or older it will not perform 100 M bit/s because the CPU is mostly not powerfully.

Please use the correct capitalisation it's important (little b is bits, bit B is bytes which are 8 bits).

It's 54 Mb/s for the Wifi, Cable is 1Gb per second which is 125 MB/s (not 1 GB which would be 1000 MB/s).

Also old routers are only 100 Mb/s because that is all they support (until the last 5 years 100 Mb/s was the top speed of most ethernet cards) not because the CPU isn't powerful enough.

I doubt we will see Gigabit speeds over the internet any time soon.

But yeah, sure, pushing a Gigabit/s of data over your local network is perfectly possible.

the internet contract is the limiter, not what your computer displays anywhere.

They might give you up to a gigabit/s but there will always be someone else between you and the website/download who will bottleneck your download speed.
That is why they only state "up to" 1Gb/s speeds and not guarantee it.
How much does service of this level cost per month?

Only reason you mentioned Google fiber is because they do tons of advertising. What makes Google Fiber so special? Nothing.. Your download speed will stil be 25-30mb/s with Steam.

My ISP can also do Gigabit connections.

Having a gigabit subscription at your ISP doesn't mean that you will guaranteed receive a gigabit/s. They will allow to to pull up to a gigabit/s.

$280 + $100 cancellation fee after the 2nd month.

Mine averaged 115Mb/s with Verizon Instant on Steam.
