So, which publishers will likely adopt Steam OS ?
According to valve, it will be announce in the following weeks, but we might make some guess...
  • Square Enix seems to try supporting any platform under the sun...
  • Blizzard didn't seem very thrilled by window 8, so they might switch to linux platform.
  • As a rule, japanese developers: as dealing with microsoft might be a drag for them (dealing with a foreign corporation and costly certification process)... Maybe Sega and NAMCO ? (Not sure about Capcom as they don't seem to have much of a strategy...).
  • Ubisoft: Not sure about it, but having an online store definitely put them at odd with Microsoft, so having linux as a backup plan if something goes south might be wise for them...
  • RockStar: A gut feeling, but the absence of GTAV on PC might hint at desagreement with the way Windows 8 handle developpers, so...
What do you think ?

World of Warcraft can run in OpenGL, so it might be the first title from Blizzard ported to Linux.
I don't see many actually getting onboard, until something more happens and this gets grounded I see it as a crackpot idea, as I am sure several other developers and publishers do as well, I don't expect a lot of startup support.

I can see Square Enix, Capcom and Sega throwing in with Valve eventually. And 2k Games as well. Those are the publishers who seem to have embraced Steam moreso than all the other big ones, and I can see them offering their products on a new platform, particularly one with its roots in the gaming community. EA obviously has Origin, so who knows what their view on it will be, given that Valve are their biggest competitor, and I'm not even sure Activision is aware of what's going on in the industry half the time, although most of their games now are Steamworks titles.

Of course, Nya is right, until all the facts are nailed down, I don't see all that many publishers rushing to develop for a new platform. Too many uncertainties. Particularly if it means foregoing the most widely used API in favour of another. One thing to bear in mind is that one of the major consoles is still going to be utilising DirectX, so it stands reason that it'd be the basis for any PC port of a console game. As someone who doesn't know very much about the technical aspects of such things, I honestly don't know how big an issue that this would be.

This is either going to be a huge shake-up of the PC-using community, not just from a gaming point of view, or a bit of a damp squib for Valve.
You seem to be creating a lot of assumptions on the Windows 8. For instance, Blizzard will only ever do Linux when there is a demand for it. If the market share stays at an extreme low Blizzard will never do a Linux Port.

Rockstar not releasing GTAV on PC at launch is very very typical of them and they have been doing it since basically GTA3. It has nothing to do with Windows 8.

Every Publisher and developer will pick up Linux if and only if there is an extreme demand. We are talking a huge market share shift from Windows to Linux. Valve getting some AAA Developers/Publishers on board could mean that's the catalyst for the shift.

The most likely candidates for Valve's "AAA" Group doing games for Linux/SteamOS is probably EA Games, Activision, and probably something from 2k. Square Enix is on the verge of bankruptcy if they don't change and I doubt they are going to risk doing anything related to Linux unless there is a demand.

EA Supporting Linux/SteamOS from the start means more users for Origin. Especially if they get on board quickly. Although they could play the waiting game and see if it all takes off before putting in the money and effort for a Linux distro. Activision has shown support for PC Launches a lot in the past.. so I can see them doing something.
