What are your favourite games that respect your time?
I’m on the lookout for games that balance being fun and rewarding with respecting my limited time. I love games where I feel like I’m always progressing, even if I only have an hour or two to play.

I especially enjoy games with a social or community element, and especially if there’s a competitive side to them. Whether it’s PVP, leaderboards, or any sort of skill based competition.

I looked into Melvor Idle as that seems like a great progression game I can fill some gaps in between work meetings with, however there doesn't seem to be a social element to it.

Curious to hear your recommendations and what makes them stand out for you.

Many multiplayer communities can be a bit toxic. Your best bet might be to find a popular single player game and join the discord for the game - the communities there tend to be more respectful.

I would also echo going against Multplayer games nowadays anyway, not just for the toxic potential but for the simple fact that they are inveitably set up by the trend of "live services".

Even those that aren't tend to be more drawn out in progress so take and age to get anything meaningful.

It really depends on what you want to play - games like Fallout 4 are great and cheap enough to buy nowadays. Plenty to do in that game.

Or plenty of good indie games like Stardew Valley where day cycles are mere minutes and so can easily be picked up and progressed in small chunks.

Chrono Trigger. Very easy rpg that i consider a light rpg. I also categorize games like Sea of Stars in this light rpg area, and even final fantasy mystic quest also fits into this group.

Chrono Trigger is an exccelent example as not only does it respect your time. It's an old school RPG and can easily be tackled in small chunks.

But the fact it has go knows how many endings means if you so wish you can spend hours and hours replaying it.

Quite frankly, any game that doesn't respect my time is bad as far as I'm concerned. However, competative multiplayer games are pretty much the last place you should look if you want your time to be respected. You can always have a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ game if your teammates refuse to teamplay for ♥♥♥♥ meaning you'll get a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ round which sucks even more if your time is limited.

A game I found to be really cool for pickup-and-play style (good for mobile gaming, good for filling slots between meetings) would be Kingdoms of Amalur. There's a huge lot of it, what's there is enjoyable and it's not overly involved (unlike, let's say, Darksiders 3 which is a delicious metrovania making it bad as a filler).

Agreed. Especially modern multiplayer games.

If you're looking at shooters, an awful lot are having progress spread INCREDIBLY thinly thanks to wanting to nickel and dime you through microtransactions.

And as you rightly point out, even then any game can be destroyed with one or two of the wrong teammates messing things up.

Far, far better you go for single player where you're in control of everything.

I play RPGs so I expect that my time will be taken up big time. Personally I prefer them the longer the better. Sadly that has forced me to put a lot of games on the back burner. Playing a RPG for 100+hours is a time sink.

Unlike you, however, I prefer single player games. I went the community element when I was younger and while it was fun at the time I eventually ran into enough people to turn me off from multiplayer gaming.

Now that doesn't mean I can't function in a multiplayer setting, It just depends on the game. Something like Unreal Tournament can be fun online. It really depends on the crowd ... not the game itself.

At the end of the day it is the game itself that earns my play time ... although in fairness I don't include RPGs in that equation. I play them regardless.

Right now I am playing Borderlands 1. That is a game i would more than likely be willing to play multiplayer. I don't mean just for the achievements ... the game is just that enjoyable. I just like playing it for fun.

The worst thing in rpg's are fetch quests than make you go back to a earlier town that is far away just to get some better armor. Ive played enough rpgs where i encountered games doing this. FETCH QUESTS do not respect your time playing a game.

Fetch quests are bad, sure. What is worse though is the whole Final Fantasy random encounter every 5 steps.

LOL..have you ever played a modded version of earthbound? They had this thing in the game if it was not a legal copy, you would get random encounter every step. I tried it just to see how bad it was, and yea, it was bad. I even got to the max level before the second town..lol.

Compared to that, final fantasy is not that bad. There are other examples too. I remember this old SNES game called Paladin's Quest where there was this one dungeon where every step = 1 monster fight. It was designed hard on purpose so people would not finish the game, but suprise them, i did..lol.

7th Saga also comes to mine when you find a certain cursed rune you need to carry to a town, and every step equals a monster fight. I think i quit this game after that awhile, and came back several years later and finally beat it.

One of the wild arms games, i think 2, has this dungeon where every step was a monster encounter too unless you equipped a special item.

Most of the time these one step encounter dungeons can also be used for grinding super high levels too. But most of the time everyone gets upset with them. I find them nice places to grind up to very high levels.

Roguelike or older emulator games are the best for short time sessions.
