Why is there a female protagonist tag?
I'm curious. Could that be the main selling point of a game?

Having a female protagonist is apparently an uncommon enough thing that people felt it was noteworthy enough to take the time to tag games with them. I wouldn't classify it as THE main selling point, but it is a point.

Fair enough
The positive: - Relatively few PC games have female protagonists so it's worth highlighting to those who want to play as female characters.

The negative - most gamers are male and some don't want to play as female characters.

Right on the first but Soooo wrong on the second. Samus,, Lara Croft, Chun-Li, Tyris Flare, Ms. Pacman, Blaze, Athena, There are dozens of female leads to be found in every era of gaming. Heck according tyo some esitimates Half of all female avatars in MMO's are piloted by Male Players..

Guys have little problem playing as female.

Keep in mind tags are user assigned and defined. So basically its something geamers tag the game with because for some gamers,,, thats a thing thats important to them.

Yes because women play games.

<<--- woman playing games. While I don't hate playing male characters (I love me some Adam Jensen and Corvo Attano) the fact that for every one female protagonist there are literally scores of male-protag games is important.

And no, "most gamers" are not male. all gamers are human beings. if you're not grown up enough to understand that everyone likes games, and should never ever exclude or *excuse* having male-only protags "because most gamers" ... you need to go back in time to the boy's club. it was garbage then, and it's garbage now, to believe that girls and women don't want themselves represented and that that representation WILL keep bringing more of us into gaming.

yes it seems bit silly to me too but then I think about it and it is enough of its own "thing" for a few different reasons. so I don't mind it.

on paper though it can seem silly.

Because people are human basically.

We have ALL MANNER of tastes and things we put importance upon. As we're talking about a subject matter that is pure entertainment where ANYTHING in imagination can be set, of COURSE we're going to get "female protagonist".

It's no different to those same metrics in book, film, or even those ropey scifi films that profess things like "you plug yourself into someone's recorded experiences" - tell me, what are the genres they offer there and can you see how they align?

This is just human nature. People find all manner of things worth experiencing.

Doesn't change the fact that Galli is totally right on this. There is a reason the generic dark haired white dude is the prevailent video game character. Because it resonates the most with the focuse marketed gamer.
And there is a reason why the team of AC Odyssee had to fight for the female lead and Dontnod was declined publishing for their games from major publishers first: games with a female lead sell less. Unless you sex them up. Which is a reason Chun-Li exist, to provide a sexy marketing lead. Or do you think DOA sells because of their well-balanced rooster and gameplay?

Sadly, I wondered if this was going to be the reasoning behind such a question.

It boggles my mind that so many younger people these days fall victim of this bizarre political ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Equality was well demonstrated during the time of the sufragettes. Why this barkingly stupid argument is a thing now is beyond me.

Maybe I'm just too European ;)

Well that and its the only character archetype one has any creative freedom witth so there's that.
Me thinks its one of those 'conventional wisdoms' the industtry goes along with. LIke the 'every moviemust have a romantic subplot'. And thats to say nothing iof the countless games where your character is functionally asexual or where the player has the choice.

And there is a reason why the team of AC Odyssee had to fight for the female lead and Dontnod was declined publishing for their games from major publishers first: games with a female lead sell less.
And if Nintendo dropped a new Metroid Prime game tomorrow the you'd basicallly have to sell an organ to get a copy. Also See the entire Tomb Raider Franchise. And again, you can't overlook the games where the protagonists sex is up to the player.

Unless you sex them up. Which is a reason Chun-Li exist, to provide a sexy marketing lead. Or do you think DOA sells because of their well-balanced rooster and gameplay?
Hey if you're gonna stare at someone on screen for 20 hours they might as well be pleasant to look at. Even women don't like playing fugly avatars. Though I do love how you immediately went to DOA.,, which is literally the most exttreme case, and deliberately so. Though I suppose the factt that the series jumped to your mind so quickly proves the marketers and developers right hmmm?
