Why does Steam not have more classic games ?
There are a lot of really great old games available on Good Old Games ("GOG") that aren't available on Steam. Why dat den ?

It seems to be a no brainer to dust down some of the bygone classics, do the tech work to ensure they are compatible with the different versions of Windows since their release, and release them here at mid level prices. All the hard work was done when the games were first released, a lot of gamers would love the chance to replay some of their favourite games (N.B. do properly disable the CD protection when converting to electronic download - 2K I'm talking to you in particular), and there's a chance for a new audience too.

What you are talking about is more GOG's area. Steam focuses more on curent games with bigger publishers as well as releasing games from smaller indie companies. GOG doesn't have the same support of current big publishers that Steam does. Valve doesn't focus on sprucing up old titles for modern systems like GOG does... they co-exist. They each have their specialties.
Just go to GoG they are more what you're looking for.
Look - I'm a Steamer through and through. I've 300 hours plus on TF2, 100 hours plus on Tropico 4, 100 hours plus on Magic 2014. I've got well in excess of 100 games on Steam alone.

GoG is Isengard to Steam's Mordor. It prices only in dollars, no real community. It tries - but it just ain't Steam.

There's no place for Steam to get sniffy with me. Who was it that was doing the big relaunch of Grim Fandango a few months back ? Last sale who was flogging in UFO pack with UFO defence in it ? That game goes back to 1993 - twenty two years ago. Come on admit it - you've been dealing old school games. We all know it.

I want the video of game play on the purchase screen. The user reviews. The link to the PC gamer review. The (sob) community forum (sob). You can't after all these years expect me to go to another site - you can't.

Look I'm not expecting you to re-release every piece of junk that surfaced over the last thirty five years. Just give us the good stuff. The creme de la creme. Go on - there's money it for you. A big slice o' pie for barely lifting a finger.

And the designers. Those shmucks. If they can't do better than the stuff they were punting out a decade or more ago when computers had about a quarter of the power they do now - go work in a call centre.

If a company decides "I'm going to take my 15 year old game and sell it on GOG because GOG's users are more interested in old games than Steam's users," then that's their business, it has nothing to do with Valve not wanting to sell them. Ask the publishers to bring their games to Steam.
Original version of Settlers and Mega Lo Mania (Amiga versions).

they do
I have Vampire masquerades BTW. It was going really well until (Spoiler alert) I got into a base to plant a bomb, got past lots of tough fights, planted the bomb, started running away, got attacked by one werewolf, survived (just), got attacked by two more werewolves, died. Bit of a demoraliser.

Or Steam could suggest it. They might take more notice of them.

Oh yes, it's not an easy game, not by any sense of the word. Most older RPGs were much less forgiving than today's. Great game though. Have you played The Realms of Arkania series? Also great old RPGs.
Just stick with GOG. Which is a lot better than STEAM nowdays anyway. At least on support side and non of the games I've bought from there have been broken. Same, I can't say about Steam. They actually give a ♥♥♥♥. When/If it becomes bigger than Steam, I will move into there completely.

Steam can't suggest anything as it is just a platform. Valve has better things to do than chasing devs/publishers just to beg them to put their games on Steam.
And if they don't have a game that you're looking for, you can contact the dev/pub (if they're still in business) and ask them to put their game on Steam. Personally, I'd like to see the two World of Aden games (Thunderscape and Entomorph) and Planescape: Torment.
Because Valve does not support other developers games, nor do they have permission from them to do so.

GOG, on the other hand, gets permission from the developers to modify the games and get them running on modern systems. By doing so, they also support those game and try to fix issues people are having with them.

They are two diffrent types of services. If a developers wants to modify and release their game on Steam, they are free to do so. If you want a specific game on Steam, you are better off asking the developer directly so they know there is a demand for the game as well as some profit to be made.

Not played them. My overall favourite game ever was the Baldur's Gate series. There's a strong and vocal minority still rate Baldur's Gate as the best FRPG on the PC. Other than that - a ton of Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri (the best way to play Civ), a lot of Total War (Shogun, Rome, Empire, Shogun 2), EVERY version of UFO to the end - Enemy Unknown, Terror from the Deep, Apocalypse, Interceptor, Aftermath, Aftershock, and Afterlight (and the reboot of Enemy Unknown but not the expansion yet), recently a helluva lot of TF2 (nearly all Payload) plus a few hours of the best in any genre that got sufficiently reduced in price, and a few oddballs because they were on special.
