I would still like my Midweek Madness sale!
Pretty much.
I'd like a pony, neither of us will be getting anything but the Thanksgiving Sale.
Why do you want a pony? Are you a child? :)
How do you know there will be a Thanksgiving sale?
There's speculation that it is to make things easier now we have refunds. Rather than people buying what they see and then refunding it and buying it cheaper later, they get the lowest price all the time.
But on the flip side, publishers may have said "It's on for 4 hours, give them an extra big discount" and now decide on a lower reduction because the game is available for longer at their sale price.
It is, but that wouldn't stop tons of people doing it till they hit that wall for the first time. This will be a lot easier on support.
I'm thinking they are going to average it out. A bit more of a discount then normal, but not as deep as a flash sale.
During the summer sale, so many were complaining about how long it takes to get a refund. They would but a game, then an hour latter, it would go on sale, so they would refund to their wallet in the hopes that they get it back in time to buy the item. I remember the forums being full of those posts. So removing flash sales makes sense.
Warning have been given, but I have yet to hear of anyone being denied a refund on that basis. Refund to buy it cheaper is allowed in the policy, so it wouldn't be abuse.
I don't mind the flash/daily sales being gone. It was a pain, sat there at the PC at the correct time, hoping that something could would come up that you really want, and when it didn't, you were left feeling, "meh" (I'll try again tomorrow).
Then the cycle starts again at the correct time the following day.
This way we'll see what is discounted for the entire duration of the sale (I'm thinking likely to be 50% off most titles, with a couple of 75%'s, though probably not many of those). I have a couple of titles I'm looking for towards Christmas.
I also think it will help greatly, where a second reducement used to occur within 24-48 hours of an original sale. I got burnt with Rome 2 TW, on that one. I bought it on a 50% off sale and then within 48 hours, it dropped to 75% off (when the entire catalog of TW games was massively reduced). This was a couple of years ago, before the new refund policy.
We might both be lucky, and the cheap prices will still be there :)
I don't think this format of a sale they are trying out, will differ greatly from what we usually see.
It's worth remembering, that these sales are usually a fixed length of time with the game returning to full price for a long duration; whereas sales, generate purchase of titles, and these games are digital games.
Might be a Win for us and for the developer's, who have already made their money from day one releases and anything else is just a projected bonus after that.
I don't undersatnd this notion of missing deep discounts. We will have to see once this year's sale goes up, but I'm sure that there will still be deep discounts that are comparable to Daily and Flash discounts, rather than the not-as-heavily discounted "regular sale" prices. What I expect to happen is that big blockbuster games, like GTA5, will only have minor discounts, like 10% or 25% off and people will blame the format, forgetting that GTA5 didn't even get discounted at all during the Summer Sale, which did have Flash and Dailies. (there was a discount on buying the game plus a Bull Shark card for the full price of the regular game, but the GTA5 base game was not discounted)
The whole "regular sale price" and then "further discountedf sales price for a limited time" thing always seemed like a scummy way of luring people into impulse buying a game rather than waiting to see if it went cheaper, or using people's hectic holiday schedules against them to buy now rather than having to worry about checking Steam three times a day to see what the deals were so you could get the best price. It also seemed exploitative to those that didn't know how the sales worked. I'm sure this new format will help cut down on refunds, too, since you can refund a game for any reason, including if you bought it at a higher price and then it went on sale.
IMO, the "sale price is the same during the entire event" is a better format than Daily and Flash deals. Whenever I went to my grandmother's for the holidays, because she didn't have internet, it meant missing out on a few days of Steam sales. I'm sure I'[m not the only one. People should be able to enjoy great discounts on Steam without having to sneak away from family and feel tied to their computers during the holidays.
