I think Gabe said something about Steam Next Fest, but nothing about games.
Valve has never really done E3, that I can recall.

However, they did an announcement on the E3 Twitter:

Steam is more of a store then a game developer, so thats like asking if Amazon presented anything.

Lots of good games coming to Steam that were shown at E3.

And even when they do games they tend to be pretty tight lipped.
Valve has a long and prud history of avoiding the media circus.
So, the rumors of the Valve and Microsoft e3 announcement was just that, rumors? Figured.

The announcement was a joke. Didn‘t expect anything and still got disappointed. All they announced were demos on Next Fest.
Unless they're expecting a leak of an in-development game to interrupt their normal creation process and thus shaking up their studio enough to make an entirely different game after an announcement and create something truly spectacular....

They did nothing this year as a company to display at E3 as usual.

And yes, their track record for 'announce at big show, oops there's a leak, hey let's just rework this game entirely from the ground up, oops here's a masterpiece'... is pretty impressive given how few games Valve has actually produced in their entire history.

We're currently experiencing a Dark Interval, better know as Valve Time™
No because they stopped innovating outside feature tweaks. :td1::bones:
Valve do things differently, even when they are in the midst of developing stuff.

More so because they're technically still devs and not publishers (yes, I know they publish their stuff on their own platform). Marketing and promotion things are usually fronted by publishers at places like E3 and so on (though not always the case).

But on top of this, you need to remember a bit of history.

When Half Life 2 was in development, quite early on, some scammer posing as a journalist managed to get an early build and then leaked it. It was not very enjoyable (because it was really early stuff and far from fleshed out) and obviously painted a poor picture.

So Valve learned massive lessons there. And remaining tight lipped more avoids this.

Basically, they have the biggest storefront on the planet. They have tons of funds. They have zero need to flout their games for potential publishers.
It happened with Half Life 1 and Portal, Portal 2 as well. That's why I said what I did.

variations on "huh, these people snaked our code" or "that did not look the way we really wanted it let's completely ditch it" have uniformly wound up creating the amazing games that we know now. While there are still those old "leak" versions, they're not ... they're just not finished, because they weren't the way Valve finished up with them.

I'd forgotten about Portal 2, and I wasn;t sure I'd got it right about HL1, so I erred on the side of caution as usual. Bugger my memory.

You're right though - that HL2 escapade I remember lead to it being a better product.
The Portal 2 was why we now have the greatest speech about lemons ever. The casting call was leaked, and voice lines were being shown, along with their prototype Cave Johnson painting (which was literally a paintover of once-presidential-candidate Ross Perot, upon whom I base my own Cave Johnson's personality in my fanfic, because that's all I had seen until P2 was playable on my machine hahah) and so they scrubbed those bits entirely. It was a very different script.
