you should also have received a steam key with the purchase
try to activate the key from amazon again on Steam via "add a game" in the bottom left of the client -> "activate a product..." then you get a dialogue to send an email to the account that owns the game. then you just have to dig through your emails accounts. the other account might even be on the same email and just have an other accountname.

and no i have never heard of a site that didn't retrieve your account info if one forgot it. that's just absurd.
i cant get passed the security pictures. as i stated up above.
i bought this game in 2010, even if i created an account back then, how am i supposed to remember it?
and once upon a time you were able to play PC games without a server. so i don't believe there was an account. but once again i'm not sure.
Steam has never done "CD keys" for offline use; it's always been keys to register the game on the Steam platform.
Unfortunately, Steam doesn't do that anymore, for some reason.
