Anyone ever played a game with 'mind-numbing terror'?
Am I out of step or am I beyond help with this genre?

I love the idea of having scary games and the idea I can immerse myself in a world (my room with the lights off) and enjoying the potential atmospheric delight ahead of me.

OK now for the reality I occasionally get a jump-scare and visual manic scene racing through corridors with audio splats where a door may be closed and a 'bloody grinning phizog get's shoved into my bored face...

Is that what is called scary? My god this genre is typical and unoriginal - or is it just me?

Now we have 'mind-numbing terror' as a strap line for a game I have just seen. Really?

Has anyone ever enjoyed a game with 'mind-numbing terror' - I wish I could

Could it be the most difficult genre to master? I'm more than curious.

Did you play resident evil 7? I just enjoy horror for whatever cool things are in it rather than to be scared, but I found silent hill 1, one of the fatal frame games, and resident evil 7 to be scariest of what I played.

Thanks for your positive input.

I have played many of these types of games and yet I seem to get bored quite quickly and I'm not sure if it is my lack of patience but they seem to always fizzle out on me and maybe just telling me I am not 'getting' the genre but I find myself wanting to as it's uniques and sounds right up my street in theory

I would love to enjoy a game with 'mind-numbing terror' It sounds fab :lunar2019grinningpig:

Mind numbing? Check!
Terror? The looming danger of misclicking and having to sit through all the minutes(!) of dialogue again, check!

Resident Evil 7 in VR is nice.
But most horror today is certainly in the area of "shocker horror" as this is the easiest to provoke. Getting real feelings of horror is not quite as easy to achieve if you can simply turn of the game at any time and nothing is at stake.

VR is sadly not possible for me but I like your honest appraisal of the genre as it is. I guess it is so heavily based on emotions that it's so difficult to replicate in real life through gaming.

Maybe I just need some jeopardy in my real life LOL Great to hear your views

The thing abt horror games is everyone has different kind of fear. Ppl who have thalassophobia prolly enjoy and find subnautica scary. Ppl who hate clowns prolly enjoy fnaf. I personally enjoy japanese horror, so i find fatal frame is perfect for me. It's abt knowing your own fear and finding the game that touch that subject of fear.

Jumpscares are the lowest (and possibly cheapest or laziest) form of "scary" game - but some people do enjoy that kind of "scary"

I prefer psychological horror games if any horror games at all. Jumpscares i find are the lowest form of scaring people, like a haunted house clown jumping out at you. This is why i stopped going into fun houses at the rodeo festival when it comes to town.

I dislike the overuse of jump scares, but they have their place.

Silent Hill 1 and 2 know how to use anticipation, dread and ambiance quite well, enough to keep me on edge when it actually avoided all my phobias.

Insomnia also had its moments.

While many games can have well written/directed ambiance and setting, the gameplay itself is a deciding factor. A friend detested Insomnia because it was exploration oriented without a method to fight back.

One example of unexpected horror was in Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines, the classic example is the hotel level where its all on atmosphere, the second example is investigating a particular videotape.

I guess the genre should be a whole range of 'styles' on paper and are divided by them when we find what we enjoy.

I think the psychological horror games can be a little drawn out and tedious relying on my attention span which isn't great - but some just lock me out from the start. Yes I know I am picky but hence the thread

Loved hearing your views so far so don't stop if you have an opinion but maybe it is me after all but the search will continue.

You might want to try body horror games also. I believe there are some on steam you might want to check out. Several lovecraftian games have great body horror in them.

Also when you get bored of jump scare games, and you will either get bored of them eventually or desensitized, you should move on to a different type of horror game. Which one though is up to you.

Yes, there are many different games that have different aspects of what is considered "horror". Even a rpg game be a horror game, like OMORI:

and yes, it is rpg with horror aspects, but i won't spoil it for people who have not played it, just that is has alot of horror aspects in it.
