A thing you should do is to reinstall your graphics driver. CLEANLY reinstalling, that is ticking that checkbox "don't keep previous settings".
it could be the following (mostly found myself):
- Certain games will not run from an external HDD
- Conflicts, check event viewer.
Oh yes, I hate Win 11, but I will get over it one day...
So it either helps to reinstall/Update drivers, or in worst case you need to do a Complete clean reinstall of Windows.
What I did was the whole update routine. Some firmware updates might be necessary if windows uses these fancy new chipset features, so check those too.
In case of your graphics card, remove drivers entirely: Not merely uninstalling, AMD has a removal tool for it for instance.
And reinstall them again.
This will ensure any old lingering stuff is removed and it'll work with the new OS.
I also disabled HDR, it's meh anyway. Seemed to have fixed some issues.
Also disabled "game mode", because to me it seems about as useful as a gamer chair. Some people claim it caused performance issues for them, rather than improve performance.
A few games had weird bugs starting up, but when I changed the game's resolution it was fixed. Oddly enough they never had issues on windows 10. No idea what went wrong there, but it's a fix I guess.
Also check your windows settings and av settings.
For some reason upgrading could reset some of them.
If a game actually crashes, there's bound to be something about it in the event viewer that could give you an indication on why it crashed.
if your Monitor/TV is not really good with hdr then yes, you should not use it.
You mean useless garbage like a working steam client?
Until one day, you are forced to "upgrade" from 10 to 11, and then... BOOM there it goes the game industry.
I'll make another note not to upgrade to windows 11.
Don't just upgrade to Windows 11 without installing the approperiate Windows 11 versions of
software.
I am assuming you forgot something while upgrading which is why windows is failing.
@Those who have issues with Windows 11 as a whole.
There is linux as an option, on which the Steam Client will also run.
"But my games won't work on Linux"-- because companies thus far have little insentive to provide proper support due to the low userbase, yes--
but every OS has its issues for gamers; even if they don't, they will get it over time because some company decides to give it the boot.
You deal with Microsoft's bothersome annoyances (ads, nagginess, etc.) which you can temporary remove with tools made by others, or you customize your own Linux environment and play games slightly later than others, when proton has proper support for the game.
it would just crash the driver and display the "graphics driver has failed" notification.
Windows BSODs when kernel failures happen which includes driver issues, and modern windows will not display any notification other than "please look on microsoft.com/whateverKBentry for more information" except that you can't use your computer during BSOD.

I'm running even super old games such as 'Clans' and 'East India Company' on my Windows 11 Pro rig without any issues whatsoever. As Elucidator pointed out, don't just upgrade from an older Windows version, you also need all the relevant updates.
Many users have in fact reported the same problem when they let their computer run the auto-update to Win11 as so many things get messed up. Best option is to wipe your computer entirely and then proceed with a new Win11 installation. That way you make sure no traces of your old OS remain in your system.
In all Fairness, a lot of that problems happen because they (the User) already messed up the System before the update.... Just that it might not have been visible before.
