Besides next new computer buy one with windows 10.
Regardless Steam is always tied to account so just install Steam on a newer system log in and all our games remain.
Only 8.1 is still supported by Microsoft, until January 10th. Then it too goes end of life.
Windows 7 is also out of support by Microsoft and Steam still runs on it.
The discontinuation of Windows XP support was mainly due to necessary updates to the Chromium Embedded Framework within the Steamclient. That update broke compatibility with an older OS like WindowsXP.
Is there any info when Windows 7, Windows 8 and 8.1 will no longer supported by Steam? No. But always keep in mind it can happen at any time.
Such a discontinuation is announced in advance. You can still run many older games even on modern Windows systems and even Linux through WINE/Proton.
Plenty of games will not work on Windows 10, that's one of the reasons I still use the laptop with 8.1 because there is games that won't work on Windows 10.
I wonder if Windows Vista would work on steam nowadays. Would be good if someone here replies who is currently using steam on a computer that has Windows 8.1, or Vista.
Giving steam customers an advance warning is the least they can do.
if products sold on Steam mention those as the minimum system requirements is not relevant for Steam no longer working on them. products sold on Steam will very likely still run on any other Windows version that came after XP/Vista.
if not, it is the obligation of the developer to communicate that to the customer on the store page.
as for 8/8.1 currently there is no technical reason to drop support, so it probably wont happen anytime soon.
If you have an old laptop running Windows 8.1 and you want to continue using it to play games on Steam, it is a good idea to keep an eye on Steam's system requirements for the games you play. If a game you own or are considering purchasing requires a newer version of Windows or other technologies that are not available on your laptop, it may not be possible to run it. It is also a good idea to regularly check for updates to Steam and your games to ensure that they continue to work on your system.
Note that most any client is based on some kind of browser. Steam and many other products are based around CEF
Chrome is ending support for Windows 7 in 2 weeks

Meaning that functionally any client you use, once it updates CEF to the latest version, will stop supporting Windows 7. And that over time Chrome may introduce or deprecate things that will break in windows 7.
Note eventually windows 8.1 will be deprecated as well. This is an inevitability. Anything that can run 8.1 can run windows 10. And the upgrade to window 10 is still free, so I don't really want to hear excuses about 'it costs money'. Windows 10 upgrades have been free for so long this excuse no longer holds any water.
That’s funny do you use
Steam
Gog galaxy
Uplay
Origin
Discord
Battle.net
Or literally anything?
Then you’re using CEF
And you’re using Chrome
