Community Ban
So my friend got a community ban. The thing is that none of us know what's the reason for the ban and we don't know what to do. Should we contact Steam Support or is there other way to get rid of it. So if anyone could explain me a bit more about that ban I would be really happy as my friend basically had to make another account because that one is basically unusable..
P.S: He needs to wait literally 16 years for it to expire and he didn't do anything badly on Steam..

Moderators / Steam Support members give the reason for the ban when a person receives a community ban. Previous warnings likely happened first as well.

Have them read the "Community Messages" on the right, they know exactly why they got banned. Also, don't make an account to ban evade, that is also actionable especially if the issue continues (issue is usually the individual breaking the rules too much).

You're not getting an explanation as you're not that user, have them read Community Messages, it has the ban reason.

Yeah as Mr Gentlebot says, they DO have the reason why they were banned. They're not being honest with you.

The fact is also that bans are almost never just out of the blue applied (unless you do something REALLY awful). They are based on cumulative behaviour.

So if your friend has a ban that is permanent (the 16 years is a placeholder 0- it will NEVER expire), then they absolutely must have been awful on theses forums and had several previous limited bans.

So yeah, they're not being honest with you.

Thanks for explaining this to me.

You're welcome. Steam can be a bt weird and unless you know how it works, it can be puzzling.

The one with the Evo in his avatar? Probably said something on the forums they weren't supposed to.

Trust me, I've seen what was the reason and he literally did it one time. It was a comment on someone's profile. Literally for only 1 bad comment he got 16 years of community ban, seems pretty unfair

You don`t get a permanent community ban for one single comment.

He didn't get 16 years for one comment. This is most likely isn't his first ban but just the most permanent one.

Past behavior counts, a 16yr (probably permanent) ban means either they said/did something beyond acceptable, or they had an immense history of warnings/bans which resulted in it. You don't just get a permanent ban "for no reason".

You seeing one time, and not knowing this time means they keep a lot of their activities away from you. Problem people tend to pretend like they didn't do anything wrong, haven't had a run-in history with mods/support/other people and will often ask people to do things on their behalf or otherwise make posts about it elsewhere about their "unjustified ban". Though there's always one person that will come in like a bulldozer, and show how absolutely far from innocent they are.

It seems some people never truly experienced this themselves....

Considering that this measure is only taken due to very extreme misbehavior they should know. If they truly don't (the reason isn't always made obvious!) then they should click the ban notification on their profile which allows them to contact Steam support, then they can ask support to clarify.

See, although it doesn't happen often accidents do happen. I found myself community banned once and ... no obvious reason though the ban message hinted at spamming (but didn't spell this out). When looking back at my previous messages at that time... I did write a lot (in different groups) but hardly any spamming. Definitely not in the Steam groups.

I contacted support, they looked into it... well, the results should be obvious.

When in doubt, contact Support. Even being community banned still gives you this option.

So if he's truly sincere... he needs to contact support. Assuming that he's telling the truth then it can be lifted again. Just keep well in mind: there's no lying to support, they see all.

It's not impossible that the ban was excessive or made in error. They do get reversed on occasion.

It's also pretty plausible that people grousing about being banned don't have a leg to stand on. Lots of users don't like consequences and their egos require them to complain and be in denial.

A bit of trivia though, your friends ban is permanent. The 2038 date is just the limit of the 32bit Unix timestap see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_2038_problem

If Valve switches it to a 64bit unix timestamp eventually then displaying the year as 2,147,485,547 would be pretty entertaining. But it would also make it a lot more obvious that it's permanent. Although I expect users would often be confused because thinking of future dates billions of years in the future doesn't automatically computer. Surely it must be some kinda of bug/error... so again it'll be entertaining to explain 64bit unix timestamps to laymen.

Not just a community ban but an account lock.

Seems like a compromised account that posted a scam link.

Nope that's not how it works.

As I explained you'd have to do something AWFUL to get a single incidient total ban.

They take behaviour as a cumulative trned.

So if he's been permanently banned, again, he's NOT TELLING THE TRUTH to you.

If My New Friend is correct here, then it might not even be them that made the comment anyway.

Be careful who you may be speaking to here.
