Kids are but mine are grown up.
200 years from there will be no Steam. History might remember that it existed, but not in a whole lot of detail.
Let's see if Humanity even exists 200 years from now.
When my little brother died they only required a death certificate to establish that the account holder was deceased. From there they had no problem giving access to the account to a family member provided that they can prove that they are a family member, as well present the account info for it such as payment on the account.
However they would very much like a will that clearly defines who the account is to transfer.
From there they simply turned control over to a family member. To be honest I expected them to just shut it down, but the support staff was surprisingly nice about the whole affair. A friend of mine also got an account transferred to him after a family death just by presenting them information on the death cert. and established family connection. In that case they simply allowed it which they can do if they choose to.
There was also another circumstance where a father has passed and transferred his steam account to his son in his will. His reasoning was that he wanted his son to enjoy the same games that he got to enjoy to remember him by. As long as the individual that is requesting the information doesn’t act like a fool, and provides the required documentation Valve is pretty reasonable about it.
Basically it’s completely at Valve’s discretion on what to do with the account. In such a case simply ask what they are willing to do in the circumstance and provide the answers to their questions. While the terms of service do state that accounts are non transferable, it also states that Valve withholds the right to make determinations on such circumstances on a case by case basis.
For a start, you can't delete accounts because there's issues with it. Valve did it in the past with people who were admant they wanted to delete games/accounts. Then they changed their mind, and Valve are obliged to reutnr it (otherwise it may be construed as theft).
So it isn't worht the hassle them doing that, regalrdess of the reason.
No, better it lay dormant. As for sharing it with anyone, you are allowed to do so with next of kin. So that would render the point utterly moot.
You already can. The option is available via the account details somewhere. Just takes a 30 day cool-off period within you can cancel the process, a final confirmation to support and violá, your account is gone.
That’s not what I meant. When you’re inactive for 10+ years, your account gets deleted automatically so Steam should give you that option with ToC stating that they won’t undo it. Of course, they would send them an email 6 months prior to remind them like Yahoo mail does by sending you one to your hotmail/gmail etc account.
It is useful to clean out all the inactive accounts where owners could be dead, jailed or moved on from PC games.
