Spooktober recommendations
Recommend some good horror games to play on the 31st.

I will start with this which I plan on playing this Halloween.

I have to say this, but the best games to play for spookiness are not found on Steam for the most part.

For this reason I have to recommend several older PS2 (etc) titles.

Fatal Frame 1 and 2 being THE Pinnacle for spookiness. Better than Resident Evil and better in some ways than the best Silent Hill. They still look and play great to this day too. Think Resident Evil style exploration and light puzzling but with the effects and trcikery of The Ring - all static and well paced spookines with good audio design.

Goodnews is that the last Fatal Fram outing from the WiiU has recently been announced for launch this month (?) so while not the best one by some mile, it's still a good option.

Then there's the original Silent Hill plus 2 and 3. Granted 2 and 3 are remastered (horribly) for the PC so therefore accessible, but it's better to get a PS2, for example to be able to expericince all of these.

One that typically gets overlooked for spooky playthroughs is Dead Space. It's obviously a well -known title, but where it absolutely shines is not just in the subject, gameplay and pacing but it's THE best sound design I've ever heard in a video game.

If you bang the game on at night, lights off with either a damned good stereo or quality non0gaming headphones, then you'll really see what I mean. You can absolutely pinpoint exactly where noises come from with precision. First time I played it was when my wife had gone away and I sat at 3 am in the dark playing this through my streo and I could swear there was something directly a foot or so outside my window, such was the accuracy in stereo imaging.

But as far as PC gaming goes, don't overlook some of the older games, like Amnesia,as they are far better than most crappy jump scare modern "horror" titles.

I have a bit of a thing for crude/pixelated horror, due to the limits in presentation leaving many things up to the player's imagination.

If it comes out this halloween (finger's crossed, though i wouldn't get my hopes up):

If not, you can still play chapter 1 & 2 on itch.io, if they're not included in the demo.

Another, yet entirely different New Blood-published game:

While it can be scary at times, it's an action-oriented boomer-shooter. Fits the spooky month quite nicely, especially the first episode.
Ooh I like the look of Tormented Souls

Excellent point.

I found myself getting drawn to some such horror games and never really thought about what the catch was. You're absolutely right - much like how a book can be more compelling than a film, it's the imagination aspect.
