Because they're all 13+ years old now, and Valve gives away old games from time to time.

It's a good way to hype up the upcoming new game too.

Free to play until the release of Half-Live: Alyx, the coming VR game from Valve.

They are free to play, not own, from what I recall the the article saying.

https://store.steampowered.com/news/57848/

Half-Life: Alyx is coming in March, and we are celebrating early by making all games in the Half-Life Series FREE to play for Steam users, from now until the day it launches!

Only until the release of Alyx. Basically a free week extended to 2 months.

"Gives away" is a weird phrasing considering that the games don't permanently register on your account.
So no Valve ain't giving away ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, this is just a extended free trial run to try and hook people in spending money on a franchise Valve themselves stop caring about nearly a decade ago.

If they still cared then not only would they be trying to actually finish the damn story on the damned same platform with some GAMEPLAY innovation and not VR gimmick that most people don't care about.
They would also not sell this on their platform:

You never watched, "The Italian Job" did you. Also I think the problem is people seem to have fallen in love with the myth of HL as a series not the reality.. I mean you talk as if the STory in any of the HL games was anything but mediocre.

HL has always been more about design experimentation than anything else. You're unlikely to see anything in the way of a sequel for some time , at least until people stop meming about it.

Black Mesa isn't free and it is a direct remake of HL using valve assets. whats with that?

I thought ALL half life games in the series are going free. that bit from the top seems misleading.
Black Mesa isn't in the series, it's a third-party remake.
