China is imposing a gaming curfew... thoughts?
The BBC reported;

China is imposing a curfew on online gaming for minors, their government has announced. Gamers under 18 will be banned from playing online between 22:00 and 08:00. They will also be restricted to 90 minutes of gaming on weekdays and three hours on weekends and holidays.

Just wondered what people thought about this, in regard to the global implictions / precedent and also in terms of whether its fair to limit online gaming whilst appearing to totally ignore young peoples apparent dependence on their phones (social media etc), which personally, I would say is considerably more problematic and widespread.

Just for context, I'm an older gamer, so perhaps its a generational thing though! :)

I'm more interested in the wording that's used in articles. They all talk about "online gaming", so I wonder whether "offline gaming" isn't considered an issue.

China is a dictatorship. I'm willing to bet this isn't the biggest problem of the Chinese population. I know I'd be stressed by social scoring were I to live in one, and the pressure to deliver, to work, to compete for high positions is so huge, there's a movement among Chinese youth to get out of the threadmill and live on some minimum.

Having one's gamingb hours limited for the sake of it sucks, yes. But if there's bigger problems, that one may not play a huge role in the grand scheme of things.

They already have money problem and destroying the one sector that can generate a lot of money isn't the smartest idea.

This isn't going to help anyone in China.

I am sure they consider it an problem but its something that you just cant control.
How would you even know if someone is playing offline?
With online gaming you can implement those time limits on a account/server basis.

It's not about knowing about it, it's about potentially doing something against it. Mandatory always online DRM would be a way to get the same time limits, for example.

There are still thousands of older games you could still play, unless every game in existence is patched for always online DRM retroactively which is just a absurd idea.

It's abaut socialist Control.
It can be implemented for Offline Games. It starts only for minors online Games.
"It's not that bad. just play offline. It's only in China". It will not stop here. It will be extendet to offline Games. But there will be loopholes. "It's not that bad, there are ways around". The loopholes will be closed one by one. " not that bad, still a way arroud it"- and than there ist no was arraoud it. Starts with minors. "Just minors", Than people with low social credit. " just for the unvaccinated". More and more People. There ist always a good reason,.

There's been a curfew on online games for a couple years now for minors in China. This is just reducing the time allotted even further.

As far as what I think, I do get the concern. That being the concern that young people are spending too much time gaming. Not exclusive to gaming mind you, but rather it'd be more accurate to say too much time being in front of a screen, whether it be tv, monitor, or cellphone.

Be that as it may, my belief is that it is the parent's responsibility to address this, not the government's. It is the Chinese government though and they frankly have their hands in all aspects of the citizens life.

THere issue is likeely less saye Doom Eternal, and More FOrtnite. If you catch my drift.

As for what i think of it. I guess the tell will be their test scores and the gdp of their couintry in another 10-20 years. Because I can see many arguments for such a thing.

I think it's a good idea. Their children will grow up as more productive members of society.

Less exposure to toxic online communities will make them better people.

Steam already has this implemented, since years

China does the right thing in one way or another. I would at least wait a few years to see if the youth degeneracy is trending downwards due to this change.
South Korea also has this since .. longer and gaming-related things are a considerable career path there and it is widely accepted.
More time to memorize Xi dada's thoughts then.
