How do some users have over 1 million hours playtime?
That's actually temporally impossible, because that's longer than the lifespan of a human (114 years). The highest playtime on Steam Ladder is 1.7 million hours! That's 195 YEARS! Somebody explain this to me.

you can not make Steam recognize 3k games running.

Steams backend can safely handle up to 32 games at the same time being their playtime recognized. anything more and it might bug out.
32 x 24 = 768 hours per day.
x 14 = 10752 hours per 2 weeks (that is the most you will find on recent playtime on a profile)
or
x 365 = 280320 hours per year
and you will have your million hours played in about 3 1/2 years.

and you PC does not need to be any powerful. you do not need to start the actual game. Steam just needs to know the game is running and you can simply tell it what is running.

this is neither "spoofing" nor "cheating". the premise for malicious intent or gaining benefit is not given, there is no designed competition for playtime. this is "simulating running games on Steam".

simulating running games has been a thing since Steam community profiles were very basic and this:
https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Steam_rating
was the only indicator of your playtime activity.
playtime back then was not recorded or saved per game, it was general and not saved for longer than rolling 2 weeks, also buggy. per game and saved came later.

as other said, playtime is pointless. if people take it up for competition on external sources is not relevant.

the more games you have + the powerful your pc is, the more games you can "launch" so you could launch 3000 games for 1 hour that would be 3000 hours. do that for 24 hours and then 7 days and you should hit around half a million hours.

you don't actually have to install the games, as you can use tools that will run idle games that are not installed that you own.

This is a lie, you can only do 32 games at a time.

They cheated. Simple. There are ways of spoofing pretty much anything on steam.

How is that cheating anyways? Hours mean nothing on Steam.

Who cares if people idle,. Steam doesn't care and neither should its users.

Pretty much, no one really cares if anyone idles their games, even Steam, GoG, PSN, Xbox, and etc doesn't cares if people idle their games.

they are just idling all games to get attention.

so they can post "funny" reviews" saying a game is not that good, while they have 13.000 (fake) gameplay hours.
other people idle "steam" for 10.000+ hours. also just for attention.

nothing really new, i guess they just don't understand how pointless that is.
Don't lump everyone into the same category when you don't actually know...

And just because you think it's pointless doesn't mean we do. Much like there are people out there that think video games are pointless, that doesn't make them right either.

When i said cheating i did not mean it as in "Those people are bad, they cheated in hours", basically saying they did not get those hours legitimately. I have nothing against people who use tools to change things when they do not harm others.

Not all. Some, maybe. But not all

Some people use idling SW to get Trading Card drops for Trading or Selling.
And some never leave reviews of any kind. They're just there to get the cards.
Which racks up a lot of hours, while the SW idles 32 games at once.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

i have 6000+ games and idle them all, too for cards. but i'm far away from gameplay hours like this.

if people have 20.000hours+ gameplay hours overall it's 100% attention grabbing.
Eh, I don;t have nearly as many games. I did used to idle games for cards, but stopped after getting enough badges to level up. The cost for having the computer on constantly vs. the Steam wallet funds from selling excess cards was not worth continuing.

But just because you think people are idling "just for attention" does not make it so. A bit of confirmation bias there, friend. People do a lot of weird things for a lot of weird reasons. If people looking for attention bothers you, stop giving them attention, perhaps? Problem solved.
Lots of other things to worry about these days.

so you can have an opinion, but others can't i see. :winter2019joyfultearsyul:

and sorry, if you think people with 1 million hours, have it because of regular playtime that's just delusional.
You can have an opinion..... You just proclain that "they" (taken as everyone) that idles is doing it for "attention" your own words, which is 100% wrong.

I idle while I play games, I could care less about who knows and I don't go around saying "ahahah, I have more hours than you" or making stupid reviews with large amounts of hours on them.

I appreciate all the discussion this has spawned. I think my question has been sufficiently answered, however. Thank you.
Your welcome!

If they really have this many hours then they have no life. If they tried to cheat for this stupid amount of time then they still have no life. I love computer games but have a life well beyond them. Maybe an eighth or less of my life is spent on these stupid games and I do not live in the basement of my mummies house.

Well aren't you special.

Don't judge others because of how much they play video games... you're part of the problem just like those who claim video games cause violence.

Stop it.

You can simulate to run the games in your phone, in case it's on constantly
