Games randomly crash/ freeze
Hi,
In the last couple of months I can't play games in full screen mode because they all crash or freeze (hard lock)..I never had issues with full screen mode before. And when switching to windowed mode everything seems to be fine . Examples are: Wolfenstein the new colossus, Metro exodus (didn't try to play that one in windowed mode yet), and the surge 2 (seem to crash only when doing a slow finisher animation)..
Tried to disable windows "Full screen optimization" but that's not it.
I am starting to think that it is somehow related to G-sync, because in Nvidia control panel it's on "Enable on full screen only" mode.
I have pretty high end system with 10900k and 2080ti (asus strix oc), 32gb ram..you get the point.. nothing is overclocked, everything is running stock and fresh windows 10 installation.

Any ideas? Although "Borderless windowed" mode is fine (I actually can't tell the difference between it and full screen) but it is just bugging me that something is wrong.

Try updating drivers. Also check event viewer and see what could be causing this.

I got all the latest updates (windows version 2004, Nvidia newest driver as well..just installed windows a two weeks ago,it's a brand new build).
I don't believe it's a driver issue, it's happening in too many games..this is something more general.

and what did event viewer show?

I don't know, I'll have to check it next time my game crashes..Right now I'm on borderless window mode.

You don't have to check the next time the game crashes, you can view previous events.

Ok, so it just happened again in the surge 2, how can i find the relevant error in the event viewer?
I don't understand anything from what it says.

When did the crashing start? Since you updated to Win 10 2004? Or also before?

It seems that it's not strictly related to full screen like I thought, it just happened to me in windowed mode. I am on windows version 2004 right now (fresh install, not updated). I think it happened before the update though.. I don't believe it is windows related.
So right now it's happening in the surge 2 every few hours..the game just stops responding and crash to the desktop. But it happens to me all the time lately with every game I play!
It happened in wolfenstein (windowed mode seems to fix this though) and metro exodus I can even play through the tutorial stage without hard freeze (need to reboot the system) and now the surge 2!
I have high end pc (10900k,2080ti,32gb 3600mhz ram) and everything is up to date! no bloatware, just clean windows installation and steam.
I have rejected almost every factor, except steam..maybe something with steam? maybe cloud saving or something while I play?
Please guys, what can cause this?

Well, from looking at the event viewer it looks like event ID 56 (source: application pop up) may be something to do with it, but i'm not sure. I came across this thread on the net:
https://www.cnet.com/forums/discussions/windows-10-freezeserror-id-56-application-popupwhenever-im/
This guy had similar issue, and someone recommended to uninstall realtek driver and let windows install the generic one. Does it makes sense to any of you?

I was asking about the Windows update because I know that the last update, the 2004 one, again created havoc for people.

The Realtek issue sounds plausible. I never had the issues you had, but when I had the Realtek drivers installed (the ones actually belonging to the laptop on Win10) every game and video had a 5 second delay. Realtek drivers have been crap for years now and the transition to Win 10 hasn't made it actually better. I run the generic High Definition ones.

Unless you have an actual sound card, running with the generic ones is good enough. Personally I find the sound better, though the Realtek drivers had better options/customisation. Don't actually need them, though.

Thx
I just did a fresh windows 10 installation and this time didn't installed the realtek driver (if windows decides to install it on its own than I can't do nothing about it) and didn't even installed the intel Management Interface and Serial IO (I actually never knew what these are for but installed them anyway).
Hope this time The games will run smooth.. keeping my fingers crossed

Let us know how it goes, I've been experiencing some issues myself that I can't seem to pin down.

Several games randomly freeze for a few seconds during gameplay. Affected games include Assassin's Creed Origins, Planetside 2, Assassin’s Creed III, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, and Assassin’s Creed Syndicate. [3038632]

i would pass on that release. if they write it like that is is way more than the exampled games. and these include 2 different engines, anvil and forgelight, which are 2 completely different proprietary engines and that is never a good sign.

also the longest open issue list i have seen since years.

i would try an older nvidia driver.

Ok guys, I have an update. So just a quick recap, I installed windows 10 again, clean install.. all latest drivers. This time didn't install realtek driver, I only use the one that came built in with windows.
I played the surge 2 and again I had a crash! (it mostly happens during finisher animations for some reason..although it happened once when I was just exploring).
Anyway, I went straight to the event viewer and I see error Event Id 1000, source: application error.
This is must be related. What should I do? why does this happening?
Do any of you know what to do to fix this?

The Surge 2 YESS! The Surge 1 was the best of the two but 2 is great. Back to the problem. Is this the only game you are having the crashing problem with ? I ask because there are people on the Surge 2 forums that have crashes in this game due to them using Vulcan improperly(?) Thats a theory from some. Does this happen with any other games? How long have you had your RAM that you are using now? Asking because sometimes when a stick goes bad I get crashes with a lot of my games. Quick solution for me until I was able to replace the faulty stick was too lower the texture settings in game. Not 100% but lowered the frequency of the crashes. Textures use most of the memory that a game uses so I think this is why in my case. Good luck and Welcome to CREO :)
