Steam is becoming the equivalent of Playstation Store
As a person that has been exclusively gaming on consoles for the past few years now, I have finally decided on build my first PC last month. I was very happy with finally having the best of both worlds, but now with the recent news of that Valve is removing regional gifting, that left me quite disappointed.

Why are you even doing this Valve? The price difference between regions isn't even that high, do you really have to region lock gifting now? What's next, the Steam store is getting split into two branches where one is operating in EU meanwhile the other one is in the US and most of the time EU will miss out on games and have overpriced games thanks to the mismanagement of the ones that control each store in each region?

if the difference in price between the 2 steam stores after currency conversion is greater than 10% you can not gift the game. high or lower.

Yes, that's what he's complaining about (rightfully so).

lets take your current favorite game
https://steamdb.info/app/379720/

Chinese Yuan ¥49.00 -> US$ 7.19
UAE Dirham 99.50 AED -> US$ 27.09

not that high. yep ... before you run into a wall, always research how hard the wall actually is

we technically have that since the beginning of multiple supported currencies, we even had multiple EU prices for a while.

every
single
price

is set by the developer/publisher for

every
supported
currency.

This was done awhile ago before last month plus the devs wanted this as they were tired of people stealing their games by purchasing them in cheaper regions and reselling them.

Not just that. See they do have physical distribution channels in some cases and there tend yto be rules against underselling your distributors in a region for a certain period of time.

Valve has a big hand in patterns of sales and pricing.

They have a trove of data that they use in order to give suggestions to devs and publishers....and they tend to listen.

Anybody that tells you that Valve has nothing to do with it is trying to sell you something... PR.

I like how people completely miss the point of the thread and complain about contributing unnecessary information, when they, themselves, contribute nothing to the discussion.

OP, it has to do with people buying low from other regions and selling on 3rd party markets. Valve wasn't getting a cut, so everybody must be punished.

Mainly because I've posted it enough over the last 2 months and people should really use the search function before creating new threads about the same exact thing 100 other threads are talking about.

all Valve provides is a suggest price button based on a USD price you enter. how pricing in done for Steam is no secret. the tutorial video for developers is public on youtube.

my example above is a dev that did not listen. it is completely off the rails of what Valve would suggest.

the point is to correct OPs misinformation on which his rant is based on. everything he stated is wrong.

Again, Valve does make suggestions in prices and are, in fact, instrumental in setting trends in sales and pricing.

Its just how it works.

You can't gift games at all on the Playstation Store and you sure can't buy, sell and trade virtual items.

So how is Steam becoming "the equivalent of the Playstation Store?"

Is this just an anecdote or do you have a story from a developer who was bullied (suggested) by Valve into giving bad discounts?

In case you haven't checked out your wishlisted games recently, there are currently 15 games in your top 50 wishlist that are 70-80% off. Those seem like some pretty good prices to me. If you want those games, you might want to jump on those deals unless you're holding out for 90-100% off.

edit: Actually, there are also over 50 games on your wishlist that are 90% off as well.

Simple solution:
1. If your region is more expensive, you can always gift it to a less expensive region.
2. If your region is less expensive, then you can overpay into the (currency-converted) cost of the recipient's region.

Technically this isn't stealing.
