Genuine question, because I literally cannot comprehend how the ♥♥♥♥ this happened.
Why did GTA 5 become a nominee for labor of love? Why did it WIN?

Because people selected it during the nomination vote.

Why did it WIN?

Because people clicked on it during the award voting.

At least that's the official thing. Whether or not Steam has adjusted the votes is everyone's own guess.

The answer to both questions is people voted for it.

I know it's a big shock but popularity contests tend to be won by what most people want to win.

It's almost as if the steam awards are somewhat awful.

They are more like a joke... That wasn't funny to begin with.

Because it's still popular AF. What's so hard to comprehend about it?

Because it makes sense to the category? No matter if you like GTA , you can't deny the amount of detail and effort that goes into them is incredible.

Except the "labour of love" for this particular title is just milking. They even sell you a pai griefing mechanism and ban you if you mod singleplayer.

It's a joke it got nominated let alone won... Like, only reason as far as I can see is that they provide incentives for whales to get nickled&dimed through GTA Online. It's so far unlike a lot of other games which get updates still far down the line (sometimes at completely unexpected times, when everyone thought all the updates were done&dusted, like e.g. Stardock did with SOASE, although they're far from the only one to do so).

Wouldn't surprise me if Rockstar encouraged people to vote for it. And with an giant like Rockstar, any non-giant will just lose out even if 100% of their buyers would vote for them. Just too much mass in it.

TL:DR Versión: People voted for it.
Non TL:DR Versión: People voted for it.

Because for reasons people like to be screwed up by devs and often ask for more.

Go figures...

There >was< an incredible of detail and effort in the original release...
There is nothing admirable in releasing sometimes a DLC once in a year and milking the playerbase the rest of the time.

It got released in 2013, Last month -> 6 years later online got a big update with the Casino heist. Seeing as how many people are still playing this game across all platforms should answer your question.

Not really, because the original release was on oldgen, not even on PC. I can tell you that the re-release put in a lot more details and effort (1st person mode anyone?).

They provide contents for the players to enjoy. If you put your mind to it you can easily get a lot of stuff without ever having to pay for a sharkcard. Sure, it requires patience and planning; it's not easy to "just" buy everything the game.

But it's definitely not that hard to come a long way. Exactly one year ago I started again on PC, only had the criminal enterprise pack. Now I'm level 306, own all the properties online (apart from the forged documents business), and I own a whooping 400k. It was around 8 million but then I had to buy the Furia, Tereract, AA Trailer and two scuba suits ;)
