I installed DS4 controller and it works. I was just wondering why it needed to charge if the power was already given to it through the pc.

Because the controller's firmware is set up to always charge the controller's battery if its remaining charge is below a certain threshold when the controller powers on.

This properly meets expectations for most living room users.

It's Micro USB, so technically … yes, but the cable will only last for 2 or 3 insertions and then you're supposed to buy a new one. Hopefully the DS5 controller is type-C, those last pretty much as many times as you want.

I had the microUSB cable of my phone break after like 3 years of weekly use, they're not eternal, but you're exaggerating.

I feel like this thread should be moved to the hardware section. Can you report threads asking for a move? Folks at the hardware subforum generally are more eager to help.

I have a ridiculous PS4 setup going through an adapter/splitter, KVM, USB/audio cable extenders and additional speakers just to connect it to a VGA monitor, the speakers draw power from one of the PS4's USB controller ports.

I'd love to know what this thread is about, purely for the novelty of weird workarounds.
Is it for just charging the controller or did someone set up to power the console through a USB port instead of the standard electric outlet?

Also, I have been using my DS4 here on Steam for over 70 hours of playing Celeste in wired USB mode only having it plugged in when I play, and never specifically set it to charge and I never had an issue of the controller running out of juice, the lighting was set to dim because it is way too bright otherwise. So if that's the issue, I assume you won't have to worry, unless you have some crappy cable I guess, the one that came with the PS4 works great though.
OP asking why his controller charging, and we don't know if he using a charging cable only. Yes there cheap dollar store / chinese cables that made for charging only purposes.
He could check how many tiny gold plated contacts are inside the connector.
Depends on if the controller has a driver that's set up for auto-charge enabling. Some things are setup to auto charge no matter what cord you use.
I actually have a cheaper shaver that when plugged in to charge, does not allow function...so some things are internally built that way. He should be able to use it through pc if it's 2.0. I would take a guess that it's missing a driver or something is set up on his pc that's not allowing plug-n-play to correctly connect and load up. That's why he is only getting a "charge" function.

@OP
Are you able to use the controller or is it specifically in charge mode?
Honestly, your question is confusing and needs to be worded correctly.
Are you wanting to know if a generic usb cord can be used on a ps4 to connect a controller or are you trying to use a ps4 controller on a pc with a generic cord?
Regular micro usb connectors have 5 contacts for data transfer.

Just a fun fact..You can also tell which old telephone cord were used for faxes by seeing if it was a 2, 4, or 6 pronged connector. Each connector on a cord has a specific use.

He just confirm his controller works fine, and he wondering why it's charging as he playing, not sure how it works with app DS4 if it tell it to charge endlessly, or what, but he has no issue with controller from his last reply.

Well we're talking about DS4 here, I don't think there are any sub-models that don't have that feature, it's just that convenient as a feature to plug it in once it runs dry from wireless mode to continue playing and end the session with a little charge on the controller.

Still, I didn't know that fact about the number of pins.

No, I'm not. I go through 1 a week. You are free to examine my garbage if you want, it is full of old cables that no longer work. That's the majority of unrecyclable waste that I produce :-\

It's the 4th one you didn't mention, micro USB is just a fatally flawed standard. I have 15 year old mini USB cables that work perfectly fine to this day after constant use for my DualShock 3 controller, I don't have any micro USB cables that last more than a week. I have a USB-C cable for my Switch and that one has lasted 2 years.

I am as careful as you can reasonably expect anyone to be while holding a device designed to give input to a game. Micro USB might be fine (though my experience has been less than stellar) on stationary devices or devices that only use it for charging and are stationary while charging.

For a gamepad, that doesn't even need this kind of miniaturization in the first place, the infinitely more durable cable standards that preceded and followed micro USB are a must. Otherwise, you have to use the controller in wireless mode and only use wired mode for charging and that's a nuisance.
