NAS for Steam games
Hi,
I have a huge bottleneck that is in fact my DSL speed. I don't want to let my computer run all day and night to get me some updates or even new games with a 512kbyte/s cable. Its not energy efficent.

I wana use my Raspberry Pi, to download Steam Games over night and use the storage for NAS tasks.

First Question:
If i download Steam for Linux, will the downloaded Games after the Steam Backup be playable on Windows Systems?

Second Question:
If not, is there a other way to download Steam games and store em after that as Backups on my Raspberry Pi?

install steam the normal way... launch steam with the -console startparameter... inside steam you got the console now. with the console you can directly download the correct files and the correct version (all has unique appid's). this way is just downloading without installing.. and at the download tab you only see the traffic speed but list will be empty. after its finished you have to move anything to the correct place + maybe modify the state in the manifest from 1-3 to 4 (for installed and up to date)

Unfortunate, this is not on a X86 Platform we talk about and Steam probably only loads Gamefiles for Linux...

Yea with X86 you was right. But there are other solutions. Raspi Steam Downloads [arstechnica.com]. I didnt read it because i dont need it.

And this is just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥... ofc if you go into youre library and start the download the normal way yea... but i was not talking about this way... i talk about the console ( -console start parameter) with this simple command here. download_depot <appid> <depotid> [<target manifestid>] which will download a single depot... so you get all informations you need by SteamDB[steamdb.info]... so if you want download this way you have to check for the correct depotid(which can be win, linux, mac version.. it doesent matter because its just downloading without installing etc.)

And here a little example with csgo. DepotID [steamdb.info] So you just have to took the correct depotID. 732 for Windows Version. 733 for Mac Version. 734 for Linux Version.
So 732 for Windows. You will see the appid at that page too and in the url. So for the manifestid you click 732 at the new site open the tab manifests. choice the version you need. so we take the last 614558246547699963.

download_depot 329385 732 614558246547699963
That command would start the download from the last csgo windows version if you doing it with the console.

You ultimately won't save any money doing this. Nor would it speed up the downloads.

Also, by "NAS", I assume you mean more than one disk, so you'll probably need a powered backplane to go with it. For just a single disk, you are better off just buying a NAS with a low TDP.

Assuming I run both systems against each other, 4 days per week, 8h a day for 0,29€ per kWh, the Raspi would cost me arround 10 bucks and my pc would cost me arround 60€ per year.
My Raspi would have a lot space for modularity, linux based and wouldnt block my local bandwith when im on PC if I want to share stuff over the network. NAS Systems will not have the freedom for modularity, even their software will not be modulare.

A modern HDD will consume arround 5 to 16 Watt, mine works fine with 9,6W max... So whats the problem with them? They would be both seperat in their system? So, if I only count the system its runin on, it would cost even less in its core.

btw because people try to compare systems with a simple raspberry...
my raspberry is always running. Im using iptables there for the whole traffic in my network. Im redirecting dns from ads too no adress so it will be much less traffic. There is always wireguard running that i can always controll my mobile traffic with iptables too and ofc that i dont load any ads so that i really dont must care about traffic. (< just few examples... there are much more im using it for..)
So if the raspi is always running anyway than you can do projects like this on the raspi too...

yep. but the reason i explaind it a litte bit is because there is a huge different in blocking and redirecting. if you go to the mainpage from pihole you will read blocking there and not directly that its redirect the ads. just blocking will not lower the traffic but redirect will do it.

TDP is a meaningless value.
No it's not, it's just got too many meanings to too many manufacturers :) Within the same product line at least, there is some consistency. We can also surmise that a non-zero TDP is always going to generate more heat and noise than having something in a cloud offsite. Those datacenters eat the cost and have insanely noisy rooms where all your T is D'd.

In true form, somebody is about to get me banned for saying D'd. Yay, steam moderation!

Thread bump as I sit lay here noticing my fan noise more than ever.

I'm trying to search around for a simple solution, my thought is a pi 4 on ethernet, running headless Debian or whatever,
SSD attached by usb 3.0.

Vnc into pi, Have steam installed, in library's change to display windows games, download game to the ssd, unplug SSD in morning and transfer files onto local drive and verify, I've used the same usb SSD trick from one pc to another without having to go through the lengthy backup and compression thing so I know it works.

Not exactly downloading to Nas but I'm one of the few that ditched the Nas (noisy as ♥♥♥♥) when Netflix became a thing

My internet is good but lining up a load of games to download overnight, clearly my quite pc isn't so quite when your trying to sleep.

You should stop find a solution to get Steam to ARM... It'll wont be a good solution.

There is a package, called docker and there is something similar to it for ARM. With that you can create your own Steam Cache Server for your pi.

At the end you have to decide to go for the Pi or change to a cheap SoC X86/AMD64 Board that handles it better (in my opinion).

Some games DRM do not like network systems. I found for a larger library of games that my HAF 932 stuffed with extreme hard disks keeps the SSD pool cleaner

Well there is a solution:

for (x86) lancache, if you have an old notebook and a USB cable layn arround use that. There is a version for raspber pi but the community support is a bit more fragile...
