Do Steam achievement have any value?
On Xbox and PlayStation the trophies and achievements give points that can be redeemed for various things? Do Steam achievement have anything similar?

No.

They never will either.

They have no value and won't get any value due to tools like SAM or those achievement spam games.

They do not give XP for badges.

Achievement data can be easily altered - by anyone.

The average joe just needs to download an application, run Steam and commit changes to the achievement data.

That takes less than 5 minutes.

No, and they shouldn't.

The highest I know of is The Mexican Dream with 10979. This was before the 5,000 cap.

Steam Achievements are more "pure" if you think about it.

It's solely about achieving something in a game. Doing it really does indicate your milestone of playing the game, or your effort at going through a certain action N times, or your skill at getting a certain trick shot, or your luck at circumstances lining up to enable a certain unlikely to thing happen.

It's not about doing it just to get a reward somewhere else like it is on some consoles where you get external rewards.

Uhm ... TF2 anyone? In some Valve games achievements very much give you rewards. Payday 2 also does it.
Whatever you mean with "external", though. I for one have a hard time cashing out my PSN trophies.

TF2 gives you untradeable items.

I haven't played Xbox since 360, but the gamer score you'd get for achievements couldn't be traded in for anything. Same for trophies on PSN, all they do is raise your overall level on PS, but you don't gain anything from it.

Take out all the absurd and stupid achievement games (like zup.) Does that change your opinion at all?
I wish the achievement system on here worked similarly to PSN, with achievements tied to your Steam level, instead of trading cards.
It would feel more rewarding, in my opinion.

TF2 *gives* you items.
That's more that can be said about any game I know of on PlayStation. LIVE had some avatar stuff bound to achievements way back. And it wasn't tradable neither.

The only system that has rewards tied to achievements on a consisten basis is Battle.net. And this stuff also is not "external".

There was one event once where Sony auctioned off some expo swag and you (US citizen) could bet your gold trophies. And this will stay a one time event as Sony so shockingly noted that people where able to hack their trophies and the first few items went to cheaters while at the same time they banned a legitimate trophy hunter.

TF2 gives you in-game rewards for doing them. These in-game rewards are not dissimilar from unlocking new game modes for beating a game.

You can't trade or sell these items to other people.
