Valve blocks connectivity to Dota 2 from old GUI users
I have tested this on a total of eight machines now. If you have blocked your client from updating so you can avoid using the old GUI you are no longer able to connect to valve servers in game.

Good move valve, you have just become like everyone else. Jerks.

Looking at SteamDB's breakdown of stuff that was changed in the patch, https://github.com/SteamDatabase/GameTracking-Dota2/commit/19538b0926a651b5daef812f7a5ff58fe769dd92 it looks like Dota 2 updated to use the latest version of the Steamworks SDK, and are linking to the newest Steam API version, "SteamClient020".

The old version of Steam you're using only has API version 19, so presumably when Dota 2 asks the Steam client for API 20, the Steam client can't provide it because it doesn't know what API version 20 is, so the game then can't use any Steamworks features, which is why a bunch of stuff then doesn't work.

Basically: if you deliberately pin to an older version of the Steam client, stuff is going to break in games expecting newer versions of the Steam client. It's just Dota 2 for now, but third-party devs are going to start updating to the new version of the Steamworks SDK over time, and then stuff in those games won't work either.

Yesterday it was still working fine and I was playing games.
So they have changed something on purpose to exclude the people who are using the old GUI.

People acting pissy when they refuse to read the subscriber agreement. It is kind of sad people are so ignorant. You consented to the updates, but refuse to accept the updates? What kind of nonsense world do you live in?

"For reasons that include, without limitation, system security, stability, and multiplayer interoperability, Steam may need to automatically update, pre-load, create new versions of or otherwise enhance the Content and Services and accordingly, the system requirements to use the Content and Services may change over time. You consent to such automatic updating."

enjoy your cent-Ipad lol. This is consumerism and this is the world of computing. There are plenty of different options. Some as easy as switching services and others as complex as coding your own solutions.

I am going to simply avoid the client with desktop icons until it is less...trashy and back to a database feel. I will also refrain from making purchases of any kind on their service while continuing to use what I have. I'm not pissy, I simply need to understand the rules of the new game they created. I used to be a steam fanboy until this last update. Now, I see no difference between them and any other service, so my loyalty is gone.

If you watched the centipad south park episode, then you would know to read the agreement contract before signing up for things. Which, you didnt or you wouldnt have made certain statements like you did. Sad

you dont understand satire do you DD? I'm with him. I'll make the best of what I have, continue to play my games but vote with my wallet and refrain from making purchases until we get a less..."americans cant read so give them big pictures" GUI.

People cant read, which is why the people complaining in this thread clearly never read the ToS when signing up for steam. Even OP said he purposefully blocked updates....clearly never read the ToS

still not getting it i see...

It's not like there are no alternatives to Steam. Good thing there are.
Only Gaben fanboys are really die hard supporters.

GOG isnt that bad. I just purchased a few games off of them. That looks to be my new home. there are plenty of services and plenty of games out there. It's sad though, I've been with Steam exclusively since 2004 and went through a few major issue. Shame on me lol.

Well... things move fowards. If you wanna stay in the past you gonna have to be willing to make trade offs.
CriticalAlpha Nov 21, 2019 @ 5:49pm
I dont want the past, I want better and I dont want a tablet touch screen marketing heavy interface. Moving on is moving forward. I'll still keep my steam account and use their servers. they just wont get any more of my money.

How to use GOG? is there a client like steam need to be downloaded? seen the website cant find any client to install if theres one.
zerogravity171 Nov 21, 2019 @ 6:35pm
GOG is DRM free so its a bit different
Yeah I finally figured out if you used the Youtube video from the other day to prevent it from using the stupid & ugly UI they have now you're fk'd when it comes to playing Dota 2. You cannot get past the "Lost Connection to Steam" message.... unless someone's found some way to fix that....
CriticalAlpha Nov 21, 2019 @ 10:13pm
You cannot get around it easily. They have updated the database so without getting f too deep, the game is looking for things that done exist in the old client.

Done intentionally I’m sure
