Is Valve too greedy? Is it time to migrate to the Epic Games Store?
Valve takes a huge cut of every game they sell in their store. They take 30% of every sale. Epic Games takes 12%, leaving more money for developers to profit and make more games. Is this a game changer? Is it right to continue supporting such blatant and callous greed? If we really care about game-makers we need to look at what we're supporting and consider going to the places that support game developers so they can make a better living and more games.

Agreed.

And before you respond OP, keep in mind everyone not in a coma for the last 8 months who has something to say about this issue has said nearly every possible permutation of the thing you've said or are going to say. So mission accomplished, you helped save the world. Good job.

So, lets discuss this. Is Valve overstepping their position? Is their monopoly in PC gaming really being threatened due to their own greed? What do you think?

If we're voting here, I vote this thread be set on fire.

hey OP, you have a great opportunity here.

be the pioneer. go, use the epic game store exclusively for the next 2 years.
dont come back here. dont post here, just go the full epic experience.

if the store still exists then or for the small chance that it is even profitable and can sustain itself, you can come back here and tell the Steam users.

wouldn't that be a great feeling?

I keep hearing "monopoly". Where does Valve have a monopoly? And please, spare us the usual Epic-Talk.

A lower cut is great, but it's not the whole picture in terms of financial returns. If devs thought Epic's store was better for them, they'd be using it more without Epic needing to pay on top of that for all these exclusives.

Besides, if percentages are really your primary concern, Itch is ahead of both of them, with devs having total control over the cut they pass on to the store.

YAWN, industry standard is 30, yes Valve could do some things better from flipping the split to favor indies instead of the multi corps who don't need it, yes they could be more customer protectionist by curating their landmine of abandonware traps on here. however, Epic are scum with ulterior motives, with ZERO good intentions towards either gamers or developers...it's all a fake sham of one big corp washing the other's hands. Valve at least EARNS their 30% for the most part, with features, fun, atmosphere and accessibility...duh...as any real gamer who follows even the slightest news of this horrid industry (as it's become) knows. The fact little blinds have to keep having this explained is quite boring...lmao

We have one of "those" turning up every once in a while. You should have seen the Epic-Mega-Thread. It was a cesspool of apologists and ignorant people. All they did is repeat Tim Sweforkcent lingo. Over and over and over again.

Literally every other PC Gaming store has a 30/70 cut. Microsoft's Windows Store has a 30/70 Cut, GOG has a 70/30 cut, the Key Resellers who sell Steam and Epic Keys have a 30/70 Cut to the developer, and the only Storefronts who do not have 30% Revenue Splits are Publisher Stores that the developer / publisher owns, Epic, and Itch.io (Indie Store - Devs get 100% cut).

I'm sick and tired of people repeating that talking point, it's irrelevant at this point. The Industry Standard will likely not change and Epic Games will either raise their cut eventually or operate at a loss until their store is no longer commercially viable for them. You can't run a good store at a 12% cut. The only reason Epic can is because their storefront is literally barebones. They have nothing but a webpage, checkout, and Friends' list. Not even a dang shopping cart, something that would take 30 minutes to implement if you have a competent developer team.

It's even worse now that Tim Sweeney is literally just turning the shopping cart and hate into a meme on twitter. I swear I think that man is a man-child every time I see him do something in gaming news.

Let's also take a moment to remember that Valve recently (last year) implemented a sliding scale on their revenue share, and a game that sells well will go down to a 20/80 split rather than a 30/70 split.

Also, literally nobody complained about the split before Epic started screaming about it for no real reason but to make themselves temporarily look good.

And also, many "Epic Exclusives" are on Microsoft's Store now, which Charges a 30 percent cut just like Steam does. If you want evidence, go on your Windows 10 PC, click the MS Store, search up "The Outer Worlds", "Metro Exodus", and "Phoenix Point", all of them are slated to come to Microsoft's Store, and Outer Worlds and Metro are already up for purchase on it.

The revenue split argument is not really relevant at this point as said publishers are not going to Epic for it but are rather just in a contract with Epic due to the up-front payments by Epic. In other words, Epic bought them out in what appeared to simply be an "Anti-Steam / Anti-GOG" contract.

So why are you posting here again? Advertising the competition? Trying to get people to leave here?

Do you go to Wal Mart and tell everyone there to go to Target instead?

No, They are not too greedy, they are one of the best Pro Consumer distributers out there, Epic is so anti consumer its disgusting, and its not your place to complain about how much of the cut is taken, all you should worry about is, if you get your game or not. You need to delve into just how bad Epic Store really is, and if you agree with their practices, then dont play PC games anymore.
