Steam gives you lots of options for this and yet you don't even use it.
"Anyone else feel the same?"
No.
Well unless you're into Novels or Story but fine with Anime art you're missing some of the Greatest Writing.
Some anime games also has pretty neat or unique gameplay on its own.
That still mean you need to pass "accepting the anime visual", certainly if someone want to try , they probably need some recommendations from other people who doesn't go that much into Adult Only games (though there's some Adult Only games that has really good Story eg, Kara no Shoujo).
I still don't get the hate considering how big the anime community and the market around it. It's not as big as AAA but there's game that match AAA quality. (Likewise PC aren't the only platform that known for Anime, Nintendo itself has Quite popular tittle such as Fire Emblem which is an Anime Game or Sony with Atlus tittle (I mean who wouldn't know Persona games?)).
There's no "Porn" tag , but there's Adult Only Filter but this will still show Anime games.
What people need to realise is to filter both Adult Only and Anime tags.
Edit : Do mention anime isn't just a game.
There's Anime (video), Manga (the art), Light Novel (Novels) too with their own respective industry .
You really ought to do the "Thematic Apperception Tests (TATs)" from this game

I enjoy VNs as a matter of fact but I read them in printed form.
The hate may stem from a) anime being tendentially polarizing, you gotta love it or hate it, hardly anything in between. That, and b) when it comes to erotic, anime has often an extremely weird way to depict this topic.
Just my thought tho.
The hate stem from B,
Likely the fanservice anime tend to get on the bad side of the people whom uncomfortable with it.
For Adult Only games, it has been there for years, steam accepting AO games is pretty questionable at its finest but I'll leave that to your own thoughts of why they're doing it.
In surface, unless the person know anime really well, it does make sense that the most posted one around internet tend to be sexual stuff or partial nudity, and sometimes over exaggerated.
But , the best one rarely have been about that.
Back to Topic, As someone who played anime myself, there's barely any Sexual content stuff in front store. They're up there for reasons.
Otherwise the person overthinking that anime = porn, which kinda stupid.
also, the language preferences are not for the store but for content that has a per-item language setting. on the store this just has effect on reviews, nothing else.
This would be helpful if it were an actual option.
I'm in the same boat as the OP. I actually like some Anime, but it has to be done right. "Vampire Hunter D" was OK. "Cowboy Bebop" is just solid gold. "Akira" and "Ghost in the Shell" definitely aces. But pretty much everything else is just seizure-inducing without even the payoff of character development or comprehensible storyline.
I think my account got flagged for Steam pushing Anime on me because I dig a lot of Indie titles and I always have. Cool stuff like "Uplink" and "Hammerfight" and "One Finger Death Punch" that are really unlike everything else ever really get and hold my attention. At that point I can set a filter against Anime, but not every Anime game actually bears the tag.
Honestly, if it were "a computer game set in an Anime style" it'd be a different discussion entirely, but the fact is that most of what I see that's done in the Anime style is specifically some weird back-alley type of "Anime fanfic." It isn't even fanfic dedicated to any particular Anime - it's fanfic surrounding the style of Anime itself, which honestly is what a lot of Anime is to begin with but still blows my mind that anyone buys it. It's like being a fan of microwave dinners as opposed to the dish in the dinner.
Nay. It comes down to: "When I type a search term into the Steam Store I can apply a filter against Anime which doesn't work well to actually remove Anime titles from the search results. Even worse, I have no means at all of setting a general or global filter to prevent Steam from cramming new Anime titles into my recommended or suggested game lists after buying 'Arigami' which is actually an Anime title, but I got that one recommended because of Indie tags in the first place. I'd just really like to not be inundated with Anime titles."
Edit because Arigami might not have been recommended as an Indie title - I think I actually went looking for that one specific game because it was recommended by someone on my Friends list. Which makes the whole scenario even worse.
