There actually was a tutorial that explained how to use the ability in the original PS1 version of Spyro 3. In that game, the gem finder was an unlockable upgrade you earned after beating the second Sparx level, and Zoe would explain how it works when you return to the home world.
They removed the upgrade in the Reignited Trilogy version, but kept it in the game as a permanent feature available right from the start, which honestly makes no sense to me since now the second Sparx level doesn't give you a single upgrade at all while the other ones do, and unlike the PS1 original, it also doesn't tell you how to use it unless you go into the controls menu.
