-nohmd is crashing my game

so the whole fix of putting '-nohmd' into the launch options has been a well known thing for a long time, and has worked no problem up until now.

But upon trying to start up Spyro today I've gotten nothing but a black screen, with my task manager saying the game is not responding. its only when I remove '-nohmd' that the game will start up as normal and I can play, but it means that steamvr is also running and constantly popping up on top of the game window. When I add'-nohmd' back in, the black screen returns. I even tried to un-check 'use desktop theater when steam vr is active' but it ends up changing nothing. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game several times but nothing helps.

I should also mention that I do play with mods using 'Spyro Reignited Mod Manager' just in case that might be relevant to my situation.

Am I going to have to just start checking every single game's discussions to see whether it starts SteamVR despite not being a VR title?
I'm getting so fed up with random non-VR games starting up SteamVR. This should NOT be a thing! Why are VR binaries included in a non-VR title? Why is VR code included a non-VR title?
I shouldn't have to enter any sort of launch options for a game that's not even a VR title to not start SteamVR when the game is started.
