You need to remember, these were designed for the PSX, back in the day. And they weren't designed to be pander to new players. The challenge is rewarding to overcome; but even if you fail a bunch of times. Don't sweat it; those levels don't cost lives, so you can replay them again and again.
I had to do a couple of them like 7 times, and I think the worst one I had to do like 14 times; but the more you do it; the more you learn the best possible route, and the faster you can do it. Just learn from your mistakes; but don't fear making them.
I watched some dude on youtube perform it and he was all over the place doing things nobody could replicate. I thought to myself, no way will I ever beat the level.
I gave some other flight levels a shot and was doing real well getting 100% so I said, let me go back to that Wild bs and try again. No joke, it took me only 2 more attempts and I got it.
The key was just ignore any video you watched, don't try to go after everything you see immediately. Just casually like keep flying forward. I felt like I always encountered something I needed to hit without ever having to do a full circle around much. It was actually quite casual the way I pulled it off with zero crazyness and I thought to myself, what the hell was the big deal to begin with? Give it a shot, you'll be surprised. Just casually keep flying in a forward direction once you pick a route and stick to it. Hit everything in front of you on the way and you'll eventually find you have it nearly done. To my surprise,I had a decent amount of time to spare when I ended up completing it.
EDIT - I'd like to add to my own patting on the back, I did this using a mouse and keyboard. Take THAT!
Yeah this is true. You might have to fail once or twice just to explore the layout and see where everything is. If I recall, you start in some smaller areas and basically end up in a larger area by the end. (Or I'm mixing that up with another difficult flying level). You basically want to clear the smaller area first, but again, without going crazy. Eventually you'll have it cleared and end up in the larger area to take care of business.
Yup, most all of those 'hit all the targets' flight levels are designed to be done in a smooth fashion like this, if I remember correctly it is even in the exact order the objectives are listed in. It isn't the fastest way, as you mentioned you can do fancy things to go faster, but just for completion, the game is trying to help you there.
That treehouse level sucked no matter what, lol.
