I will be honest - that game and Crash Bandicoot games are purely for nostalgia-goers. if you never played those games before, then you may find them too linear, narrow, crumblesome, cheasy and plain simple
it is mostly a product for those who want to revive their childhood memories (because for their time they were a must-have games on PSone) - however by today's standard they are very niche games
it is way better to purchase another platformer (or any game) instead of that one (especially for that stupidly high price!). if you never played that game, then simple move on - you will lose absolutely nothing
in case of Spyro there is also lots of glitches, bugs and errors that still were never addressed by developers (they didn't even answer on that forum) - so don't expect any real support. Spyro may stuck in the air, refuse to jump correctly, will slide on earth, have missable gems, corrupts a savefile, graphical fog that is okay for console is just a moveton for PC, script ain't work correctly, game freezes at credits or when Spyro obtains orbs, and so on. it is a technical mess
yes, I did play that game (and Crash Bandicoot remake), finish them both 100%, refreshed my childhood memories and that is pretty much it
My favorite platformer is Lost Vikings, though I'm rather boycotting Blizzard right now.
For Spyro 2 and Spyro 3 mostly, you get a chance to play as different characters, control vehicles, you have to travel back to old locations with new skills/chars and it is not as much linear as first settlement.
I would suggest trying Spyro 1 and if you find it too boring, the 2 a 3 are better, bit easier and deeper in almost all aspects.
At least here the game feels different enough to feel like a new take on an old classic but not so different that it barely feels recognisable. Not to mention all three games give you the option to use either the remastered or the original soundtrack which is something I wish more remakes would do.
the gameplay of Spyro is very simple: go through levels, do some platforming, collect gems and other collectibles to progress. 2 and 3 have some minigames to get more collectibles.
if you're looking for a difficult platformer you'll not find it here, these games are fairly easy, they have some occasional difficulty spikes but for the most part they're not difficult. on the other hand, if you just want to chill and have fun, these games are def worth picking up. if you just want to turn off your brain for a bit and enjoy beautiful visuals these games have it. also, these games are somewhat short so if you want to get the most out of them you're gonna want to 100% them. they were practically made for that. also, out of all of these games Spyro 1 is the simplest one, but it also has secret areas which can be difficult to reach if you want to 100% it.
Now i have a chance to at least beat all the final bosses and know the story. And it's still really fun to me, not the "Nostalgic" fun, but just fun. (I did not finished the original)
My favourite one is Spyro 2, because i think the story and the level design are the best and really enjoyable compared to the another series.
Edit :
I like the Spyro's skin change when he got a super power, it's very cool
but technical mess? im not sure what you are talking about to be honest. never had any of these issues you speak of (other then the two i mentioned)
as for is the game worth it for players who haven't played the originals?
probably not. spyro is very simple. and you probably would get board of it very fast.
there's alot of charm and the game is very pretty to look at. but gameplay wise you are doing the same thing through the 3 games more or less over and over again,
the 3rd game sorta address this by having more playable characters in certain missions and having more vehicles and mini bosses. but its very much the same.
but to say its a technical mess is vastly over exaggerating.
