FOUNDRY

FOUNDRY

Why is it still Voxels though?
Everything else looks done, when are they going to fix the voxels? Looks like... Minecraft meets Satisfactory. Seems really out of place.

Satisfactory is the one that feels really out of place to me. Finite map, infinite ore nodes, total lack of the kind of expansive factory that the games with larger scopes let you build.

No, I meant the graphics are clashed... You have actual machines, conveyors, etc... then you have.. voxels. I mean, I get that it's an easy way to push out an EA game, but there are far better ways to handle it than just.. boxes. Games like 7 Days to Die and even Space Engineers use Voxel-like ground that isn't just boxes.

That's what's confusing.

I think that is wanted and the idea and core and essence of the game.
I love it that way. It is like minecraft and the boxes make sthe charm.

But personel I had like a less plastic look and a high detailed photorealistic look for the machines. And maybe one of the realismus enhanced shaders like you can have them for minecraft.

I agree.
I think it's only because of the block world that it's possible to create a factory that's neatly aligned.

I'd imagine it's much simpler to create procedural voxel worlds over other environments.

Pretty sure what the OP means is even other games uses voxels "cubes" the do some kind of smoothing too make the world look less "blocky".
In 7 days to die if you dig one block on a flat ground the hole is an upside down pyramid, instead of the cube, but you still fill that hole with a cube.
Is just the game smoothing down the 90° angles to 45° graphically, but keeping the same voxel mechanic.
Is better? meh... look slightly different and works exactly the same. I'm fine how is it, it fit Foundry.

I believe there's a fundamental distinction between games like 7 Days to Die and those with block-based worlds.
In survival games, I think boards and blocks are used for building primarily due to their ease of connection.
Foundry, with its block-based core, aligns more closely with Minecraft, as both my and TargetLost's perspectives suggest.
Perhaps it's apt to envision Foundry as a Factorio implementation within Minecraft.
Personally, I have no qualms with Foundry's current terrain design.

Is only graphical, not a physical change.

Those are 3x3 blocks placed in a 3x3 hole in 7dtd. The empty space between the plywood and the asphalt is an actual full block.
The game make half of the block go down 45° degree to smooth the edges, but still a cube.
You can't fill that small empty space in any way, because for the game it still a full block.

Because voxels are the easiest way to make a procedural, destructible map.
