Space Haven

Operations job not activating for incoming asteroids.
The description for the on-demand setting of the operations console says 'when needed'.
However, despite having a scanner and a crewmember whose sole highest priority is operations, asteroids get ignored.
Even when set at full-time, I've had crew track an incoming asteroid, only to leave their station seconds before impact because it was their break time.

As a result, whenever I'm in a system with asteroids I have to play the game zoomed out and track which asteroids will impact, to then set it to forced to ensure the job gets done.
And even then I sometimes have to draft and undraft them, because otherwise they'll want to finish whatever they're doing first.

Asteroids are surprisingly dangerous. Four defense turrets and a shield and still I've had two hull breaches that killed all my crops. So when I'm exploring a derelict and I leave a crewman behind to man the ops console, I want to rely on them to do their job.

If possible could you provide a screenshot of your settings?

Of Attack Systems and Control view and also crew priorities and crew schedule.
These are the three important parts that decide whether they will or will not intercept.
Hi!

Set the system readiness to "auto" in the upper right corner there. It will take care of switching it to forced automatically if an asteroid is on a trajectory towards the ship canvas.
The system is already set to auto, and as far as I could tell it would just set the ops job to forced, even when no asteroids were on a direct course.
Screenshots on Steam as a bit tricky, give me a second.
As you can tell most of these are just set to their default settings.

They dont work. Are you sure you linked them properly, they are uploaded to your profile, and are publicly visible?

edit: checked your screenshots it seems you forgot to upload them to your profile. For a while now steam saves the screenshots on your PC and requires you to manually upload them under your profile.

Hi! In your screenshot "auto" is off. In the system readiness at the upper right. Switch it from red to blue. Maybe you had it on auto before as you mentioned them getting forced to work.

Indeed, on auto the system will put forced work as long as an asteroid threat is there. If I recall correctly it looks at the ship canvas so it is not perfect but works, should still ignore asteroids that whiff completely.

They should leave and go other jobs when no asteroid is on trajectory.
They do indeed do that for jobs like shields, only coming in to recharge them when they've taken a hit.
The way the tooltip describes it I'd expect the same for point defence, but yeah.
On auto it does indeed switch to forced, but that's not ideal since the asteroid threat never ends and my crew will work until exhaustion so long as I stay in the system.
The irony of them working constantly even while there's no asteroid underway is that when they eventually do go rest, there's a chance of getting hit while they sleep.

I'll take a closer look at what's happening. Perhaps they do actually do their job but they don't make it to their console in time.
Roughly speaking they need to start heading there when the asteroid is at twice the defense turret's range if they hope to actually get a shot off before impact.

The problem is that it depends how big your ship is. (For some reason i cannot check the screenshots:S)
The asteroid threat, that will hit your ship is basicly detected for operations dude like twice the distance of the PDT's range. So they will only start to go there then. Which depending on ship size how you placed access points and such might be too late.

As an experienced player i would say that if you are playing with PDTs the operations should always be manned. Have two or three persons that have operations 2 (preferably 4 or 6) and have 2 or 3 shifts and assign one person to each shift. Slightly overlapping shifts will also help at minimizing "nobody at station" happenstances.
In the starting sector the asteroid hazards most of the time can be avoided by good positioning. (Behind a base, a derelict etc.) Not always, as the side from which asteroids come are random. (This was asked of the Devs if it would be possible to gain this as knowledge if at the cost of needing to build a scanner. I honestly don't know what became of this idea:P)
Your other option is if your crew is too small or you do not have enough operations crew members is to use starfighters. Those attack asteroids at a longer distance. 2 starfighters basicly guarantee that no asteroid will be able to reach you.
Yeah I'm still early on in the game. Only got four crew to work with. I haven't built a starfighter yet, I'll try those out.

Here's a screenshot of my ship. An asteroid is about to hit it, while my ops crewmember Talia who should have started moving there, has decided to finish her research first. The asteroid is within range of four turrets.
I'm sure that after she finishes her research she'll start moving to her station, but by that time it'll have already impacted.
The starfighter sure is impressive. It's doing more work than four defense turrets combined.
I guess the issue still remains, but thanks to the starfighter it's no longer an issue.

Sadly i cannot check the screenshot. (Steam is giving me error, both in app and in browser.)

However do keep in mind that Research is different compared to other activities.
Most actions are performed by a single action. Botany meaning they dwibble with the growing bed and move away, industry means they create one thing (or recycle one thing).
Logistcis means moving one item and so on. I think you get the gist what i mean.
There is ONE EXCEPTION. You guessed it:) Research.

Research works in a way that a single Research Action is actually 3 points of research.
If you check out your crew member she will be doing 3 points of research before either moving to another research station (if you have another one) or she will go take a break.
The only way to disrupt this is to draft briefly the character and undraft. Then operations should take priority.(If you set your priorities correct. Though operations personel should not be the one that also does the research or medical stuff.)

Anyways good if the starfighter works. It has other issues, is why i not prefer it, but perhaps for early game it is a better option:)
I did not know that about research. That eplains a lot.
Not sure why the screenshots aren't showing.

Now they do, steam side issue it seems. (Is why aksel was able to check whereas i was not. Different regions:P)
You should set operations to yellow by the way if possible. (Or middle.)
Your last screenshot shows it is on only when needed. Yellow is a bit better, i usually have it on that or always manned.
