Infrablocks - What am I doing wrong
Saw a post like this a year ago, so decided to start a new one.

I'm playing on medium difficulty and I followed the guide (at least I thought I did?). After my first jump, I have 0 infrablocks.

Here's some things I did that might have contributed:
- Research: I started research early, because hey let's get a head start.
- Doors: It looks like maybe what I spent a lot on was doors (4 personal rooms, 3 doors to separate the bridge and rear engine room).
- Temperature: I had to build 5 extra thermal regulators due to rooms being cold. Am I supposed to centralize them better or build more vents? Moving them doesn't seem to make a difference. (The recycler room definitely needs its own)
- Ship size: I ended up having to build 3 total hyperdrives to accommodate my mass just to jump. I added two 4x7 wings (one for the hydroponics area), the other one is empty, so wasted space I guess?). My recycler room is super packed at only 4x4, and my bridge is packed as well at 4x5 plus a 13x2 hallway.

Tool production is likely the other culprit. Am I supposed to turn off the tools facility or deprioritize it or something?

A screenshot would help to see how your ship layout is doing.

Infrablocks are eas to salvage though, shouldn't be too much of a problem to restock. You're tool facility should run around the clock though.

No need. I know the issue, i had a similar one ages ago. When i knew what i need and what i wanted to build. And on brutal this made me not have enough infrablocks to build the hyperdrive so i got stuck in the system.

First things first Bihtsift.

My guess is that you started with the Basic Platform start.
You have limited amount of blocks available. They allow some leeway but depending on the difficulty you play at not much.
So, do not start to separate, decorate or such. As you might face what happened to you. You run out of infrablocks.

Each infrablock produces 1000 tools. (tools facility)

Each door if i recall well costs 1 infrablock. And 25 tools.
Each wall section you build costs also 25 tools.
Each thermal regulator needs 1 infrablock and depending on wall type 10 or if placed down on ground 25 tools.
Increasing the ship size means you may need more hyperdrive. Each normal hyperdrive needs 2 infrablocks.
The growing beds, depending on the size cost 2-3-5 infrablocks. (so best not to build them at start.)

If you turn off tools production, then once there are not tools available, your folks will be unable to repair or build anything. DO NOT DO THIS, UNLESS YOU ARE A VERY EXPERIENCED PLAYER.
It doesn't sound like you did anything wrong, just expanded slightly beyond your means.

As long as your hyperdrive, nav station, power block & recycler are down you can go scavenge another derelict even on brutal right away.
Thanks for the replies! I'll hit the derelict in the next system first thing.

Here's my ship:
I definitely have wasted space and a lot of walls. I didn't actually consider just how many tools I've spent on walls and things so that makes sense!

Yeah, ship too big, too many doors/walls. Only beds and kitchen really need walls. Bunks are fine in the beginning, all in one small room.

Outer hull can be used for walls initially, like your "wings," less internal walls to build. Plus the crew likes windows.

1 shuttle, 1 pod is fine to start. That's several extra infra.

Space suit door plus walls around recycler, smart, but waste of blocks in the beginning. Also several other infra.

Third engine, 2 more infra.

Hanging around researching, might have wasted blocks/tools to wear and tear fixes?

Lights also use infra/tools, and aren't super important in the beginning.
You also start food way to early, delay it. Put the barracks room with bunk beds aginst a side of the ship and get a window, have the barracks room also lead into a communal area when people wake up, that they can eat and relax in.
Everything uses infrablocks. They are the base building block for everything. There's no point in listing what uses infrablocks. It's like someone asking what Carbon is used for in Advanced Chemistry. Everything.

The only major thing that doesn't use infrablocks is hull creation.

Correct, I listed it to make the player aware of it:)
He is a returning player, so might be rusted with what is what and such:)

The 3 pods and shuttle were there to start for me IIRC.

I'm probably wrong, but I thought the guide told me to build a growbed. Since all the different sizes seemed to cost the same resources I just made room for the larger one.

My first time playing actually, sorry for the confusion.

Thanks again everyone, totally makes sense what I did wrong here. Having a blast, might give it a restart.
It's worth noting that, water and fertilizer aside, the growing beds require a lot of manpower. Consider waiting until you have more members in your crew, before building them.

In brutal I had to do something half that size with a bunch of junk crammed in and I had a lot of mental breaks, so it seems normal.

This start can be strong as you can start with a lot of good essentials normal ships don't have early on, but you have to be very mindful of your resources.
