Space Haven

Any tips?
I'm having problems managing food. I'm running out of everything and there's always liike protein or vitamin missing. Last time i had someone starve... I did set a custom diet. Less of the nuts and meat, more veggies and some fruits. I am mostly able to grow veggies.

So, what should i do? I did train for nuts recently and i added grow beds but i know i'll run out of fertilizer.

Place an Algea dispenser as backup for low food stocks.
In all your storages disallow eating from stock so that the crew doesn't run off to grab that one fruit or vegetable.
Trade for food and/or ferilizer.
Research composter and build a couple of those. They get overwhelmed by the biomatter for compositing. You'll get fertilser from those too.
One slot of one of the grow beds should be assigned for an item your crew doesn't have the skill level for yet. you'll get the ongoing warning Not enough skil level. But once that goes away you'll know someone leveled up enough and you could assign more of that item and/or reserve a spot for the next level item.
If you are having issues with food, your best bet is doing the transport missions for the Farming station.
(Need to build a cargo port to accept the cargo.)
It is boring but it will allow you to build up at a slow pace all the things you need.
Especially good for aquiring food.
As you have 3 options to select as reward.
First two options are resources the last is always credits.
You can survive on the algea dispenser only, no need for the kitchen or protein.
It will say "starvation" but no one will actually die.
The only thing you get from better food is higher moral and some modifiers.

If you have the space and enough water, youll need about 6 plots of land per colonist to be maxed out on protein etc.. You can get by with less if you do vegetables only.

Fertilizer is a bottleneck, youll need to buy& recycle monster meat to get more chemicals to turn into fertilizer, and travel alot between systems.
Set all your storages to not allow colonists to eat meals directly from them so they don't gorge themselves on a full stack of your precious food when they're craving nutrients they're deficient in.

Build one small storage in or near your dining area and set it to take Space Food and Processed Meals only. Set all your other storages to not store those items so your colonists take all the Space Food to the this special meal storage (as well as any Processed Meals they may drop if you draft them during a meal) Set only this storage for colonists to eat meals directly from.

Algae Dispenser as a backup is helpful. Fertilizer is a bottleneck so get chemical refining researched and built.

Composters are slow, but if you have the space and blocks to spare they'll get you water, small amounts of fertilizer, and reduce biowaste buildup in storages.

To supply good kitchen meals you'll probably need a combination of trading and looting derelicts to supplement your own farming until you get the skills, research, and enough growbeds to build all four food items in sufficient number. Some early trade goods I've typically had surpluses of are Soft Blocks, Hull Blocks, and sometimes Root Vegetables if Botany skills are low. Keep an eye out for markups, discounts, and especially special trade requests.

Faction fights can work in your favor. If you come across a system where two ships are fighting each other, but not you, you can wait them out and salvage the loser after they suffocate to death. This gets you a lot of cargo and blocks. Oftentimes the warring parties will make special trade requests or request medical assistance too, increasing your gains further.
And in worst case scenario:
- if you provide me with your current research regarding farming(biology/botany whatever it is called)
- if you tell me the number of crew members
- how many have botany and what level

I can come up for you with a diet(meal setting) you can produce, or at least manage easier.
(But since you are saying you can only produce veggies i think your highest botany as 3)
You can survive on the algea dispenser only, no need for the kitchen or protein.
dangerous missinterpretation what the algae diospenser does. in the long run it can kill ppl thnx to poisoning and mallnutrition.
and he says he already has problems in that sector.

simplest answer woud be to buy some food containers from other ships until you got your own food running. and when you buyed them make sure the wander directly into the kitchen or a storage with "dont eat from here" enabled. other they are fair game for direct consumtion and wasteing, one crewman eats a full crate when he gets his hands on one and eat directly from it. also make sure that you let go processed food into a storage that allows direct eating.
For those advising about not allowing crew to grab food from storage - thank you!
I've never seen a refugee die from algae deficiency ( android ). Refugee for 220 days. Maybe it's a thing on difficulties higher than medium.
